PR Predictions for 2013 ? Communiqu? PR Blog

12.31.2012 | Holly Zuluaga

It is a new year and a time to look at what the future holds. Public Relations is constantly changing and evolving and this upcoming year is no different.

At Communiqu? PR we are constantly monitoring and keeping on top of the latest trends and predictions. While looking at PR predictions for 2013, I came across two interesting articles that suggest what is in store for the new year. A Ragan.com article written by Sandra Fathi outlines ?6 PR and Social Media Predictions for 2013,? and another post from Business News Daily looks at, ?25 Big Ideas, Trends, and Predictions for 2013.? Both articles offer some insightful predictions and I?ve selected some of my favorites below:

  • LinkedIn is the new Facebook. In 2013 more companies, particularly B2B, will leverage LinkedIn to connect with current and potential customers and influencers in their particular space. We helped one of our clients, Attachmate, leverage LinkedIn and have seen great results and a steady number of followers. We?ve noticed that particularly for B2B, this is one of the fastest growing social media outlets. It is a ripe platform for businesses to connect and share information. The new features that allow people to ?endorse? is great for businesses and employees. Fathi says that ?As adoption and activity on LinkedIn surge, journalists will spend more time using the platform for research, identifying sources and breaking stories.?
  • Social media spreads to government. Social media is not just for consumers and businesses. More and more government agencies are leveraging social media platforms to communicate messages and connect with citizens. Fathi uses the example of the Israel Defense Force and Hamas military using Twitter to communicate to international government officials and the general public about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Additionally, the 2012 United States presidential election set records for Twitter activity. Twitter is already seen as a news source for citizens searching for information from media, but in 2013 government will have an increased voice.
  • Traditional journalists are restored. Journalism has seen a dramatic change with the birth of blogging and social media. The public demands information that is fast and easy to access. Traditional journalists have been fighting this battle and trying to adapt ever since.? However, with the amount of factually inaccurate information circulating through social media and blogs in an attempt to be speedy, viewers are eager to revert back to a reliable news source. When Twitter first became hot, I was working as a reporter and always frightened to provide too many details on Twitter or Facebook until I?d confirmed. Now, it is not uncommon for news organizations to report scanner traffic via social media or report information and note it has not been confirmed. This can lead to rumors.
  • PR goes mobile. More and more consumers and journalists are using their phones as their primary news source and primary means of communications. In 2013 PR professionals not only need to craft pitches that are concise and easily readable via social media or on a mobile device, PR pros also need to think about news content that is mobile-friendly.
  • Pictures are a must. We?ve written in the past about how powerful infographics are, but in 2013, PR pros will continue to see the importance of images to tell a story. Fathi writes, ?All Things D reported that in August, smartphone users spent more time on Instagram than on Twitter for the first time since Instagram launched in 2010.? This is another indicator that pictures are taking over. When you are developing content, keep in mind what visual content you have to help tell the story.
  • Brands will become publishers. Many organizations have already realized the benefits of having a blog, but in 2013, more brands will create additional content to help build thought leadership and credibility. Tips and how-to guides will start to crop up in company newsletters, blogs, etc. This also helps organizations with search.

Here at Communiqu? PR we are looking forward to this new year and everything that 2013 will bring. What are you predictions for 2013? We?d love to hear from you!

Chennai:? Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul Haq has elected to bowl first against India in the first ODI of the three-match series in Chennai.

India have made just one change in their T20 team. Virender Sehwag comes in for Ajinkya Rahane. Pakistan bring in Shoaib Malik in place of Umar Akmal.

Damp patches on the outfield due to overnight rain delayed the start at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.

Play, which was scheduled to start at 9, had to begin an hour late, with no reduction in the overs. Billy Bowden and S Ravi, the two umpires, made an inspection of the outfield at 8.45 am and pegged the toss at 9.30 am.

This is the first game for both India and Pakistan under the revised playing conditions for ODIs, which include the provision for two bouncers in one over, one new ball at either end, the abolition of the batting Power Play, the mandatory presence of at least five fielders inside the 30-yard circle throughout the 50 overs and the statute that the bowling Power Play must be completed by the end of the 40th over.

Woman in custody in NYC subway shoving death

NEW YORK (AP) ? A woman sought in the death of a man who was shoved in front of a subway train was picked up by police on Saturday after a passer-by noticed her on the street and called authorities.

The woman, whose name was not released, was being questioned and had not been formally charged, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said. Investigators were arranging for witnesses to identify the 31-year-old woman in custody as the person who pushed Sunano Sen to his death on Thursday night.

The 46-year-old Sen, who was from India, ran a printing shop and was living in Queens. He died after a woman muttering to herself suddenly lunged forward and pushed him off an elevated platform and onto the tracks of the No. 7 train, which connects Manhattan and Queens.

It was unclear whether the woman had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they waited for the train.

The woman fled after the attack. Police released security camera video showing her running from the station. Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify her.

On Saturday, a passer-by noticed a woman who resembled the woman in the video and called 911l. Police responded and confirmed her identity and took her to a police station, where she made statements implicating herself in the crime, Browne said.

The attack was the second time this month that a man was pushed to his death in a city subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He claimed he acted in self-defense and is awaiting trial.

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

13 Easy Genealogy Resolutions You Can Make and Keep

Thanks to guest blogger, Lisa Alzo, for the article below.

I don?t know about you, but I can?t believe that we are just days away from saying ?so long? to 2012! The festivities surrounding New Year?s Eve often prompt us to make resolutions (I prefer to use ?set goals?). If you?re looking to improve your genealogical research and writing skills in the New Year, here are 13 (for 2013) easy resolutions you can make and keep!

1. Make a plan. Do your past research habits include just randomly typing names into online databases, or Googling an ancestor?s surname? Then it may be time to change them. Developing a Research Plan to focus your research tasks and keep a research log to track your searches. Not sure how? ?Plan Your Way to Research Success? (on CD) can help get you started.

2. Clean up your family tree. As genealogists, it?s useful to review our family trees for incomplete or incorrect data that can impede future research success. If you don?t have a copy of Legacy Family Tree 7.5, consider investing in it now, or if you?re already a Legacy 7.0 user, don?t forget about the free update.

3. Tidy your sources. Slacking off on those proper source citations? The New Year is the perfect time to remedy this bad habit. Learn how with a copy of Evidence Explained.

4. Back up your data. Start the year off right by backing up your family tree, digital images, and critical research documents. Make an appointment to do this regularly. Get advice from Thomas MacEntee?s Webinar-on-CD.

5. Contact those cousins! You never know who holds the missing pieces of your family history puzzle. Social media makes it easier than ever to reach out to relatives and find family?do it before it?s too late! Use Legacy Family Tree's Interview Questions (over 1,200 to choose from) to ask just the right questions.

6. Record family stories. This year, go beyond the ?name gathering? and dig deeper to learn answers to the ?Why?? questions. Using an app like Saving Memories Forever makes it easy.

7. Scan those photographs! In 2012, we were sadly reminded that disasters happen and how painful it is to lose precious family photographs. Learn how to scan and preserve them with a copy of Digital Imaging Essentials by Geoff Rasmussen.

8. Join a genealogical/historical society. Not everything is online! These organizations offer untapped resources and networking opportunities. Check with the Federation of Genealogical Societies or use Google to find one you like.

9. Explore a new resource. Using the same databases over and over? Learn about new resources and techniques for finding female ancestors, using land & property records, Croatian genealogy, and more, with Legacy Family Tree?s QuickGuides?.

10. Attend a conference. Whether it?s your local society?s seminar, or a national conference, try to make at least one 2013 event. Check Conference Keepers for a list. Can?t leave home? There are live streaming events (e.g. from RootsTech), and Legacy Webinars (see #13).

11. Attack a brick wall. Dedicate 2013 to defining a brick wall research problem and make plans to attack it head on. Get help from the Legacy Brick Walls Bundle CDs.

12. Publish your research. Take your research beyond the ?boxes and lines? and considering sharing your findings in a blog or a book. Learn how with the ?Ready, Set, Write!? CD.

13. Learn something new. Legacy Family Tree?s 2013 Webinar schedule has more than 40 classes from genealogy's leading educators. With over 60 hours of free genealogy education, there?s no excuse not to improve your knowledge or skills!

Wishing you an abundance of genealogical success in 2013!

5 Big Discoveries About Personal Effectiveness in 2012 ...

The science of self-improvement never ceases. Every year brings dozens of new quirky findings about how to be more effective, whether in managing our time, being more creative or just getting things done. Here are some of the highlights for me from 2012.

1. You don?t know yourself as well as you think

We think we know ourselves best, but more and more evidence is surfacing to the contrary. This raises an interesting challenge for employers who solely base their hiring decisions on self-reported questionnaires. Psychologist Timothy Wilson proposes that to really know someone, you have to ask others to evaluate you. It turns out that how you see yourself and how other people see you are only very modestly correlated.

In his book, Strangers to Ourselves, Wilson talks a lot about the adaptive unconscious. He tells us that much of what we do lives in the unconscious and therefore we cannot detect it ourselves. Things like what we think, feel, and want become unnoticeable. Now of course, if you?ve ever practiced mindfulness, or have ever self-reflected, some of the unnoticed start to surface and we gain insights, but more often than not, a lot of information goes unnoticed.

This is why one might have a hard time understanding why things go wrong. Given that we aren?t completely conscious of what we were doing, we tend to blame others for our mistakes. In order to gain better insight into ourselves, we need help getting the right answers. It turns out that other people's assessment of your personality predicts your behavior better than your own assessment would. So instead of thinking you already know everything about yourself, stop for a minute, and ask someone else.

2. Have a problem? Distract yourself from it

It?s already known that in order to gain an insight, your brain has to be in a quiet state, but new research by Neuroscientist?David Creswell?from Carnegie Mellon sheds light on the phenomenon of how and why it can be valuable to come back to a problem, after a brief moment of distraction.

Creswell explored what happens in the brain when people tackle problems that are too big for their conscious mind to solve. He made three groups of people think about purchasing an imaginary car based on multiple wants and needs. One group had to choose immediately?this group didn?t do so well at optimizing their decision. The second group had time to try to consciously pick the best car? yet their choices weren?t much better. The last group was given the task, then given a distracter task?something that didn?t require lots of mental energy, but still held their conscious attention, allowing for their non-conscious to keep working on the problem. Results showed this group did significantly better than the others at optimizing their decision.

FMRI scans also showed something interesting happening with the third group. According to Creswell, the brain regions that were active during the initial learning of the problem, continued to be active (we call this?unconscious neural reactivation) even while the brain was distracted with another task.?

In short, when trying to solve a complex task, people who were distracted after first tackling the problem did better than people who put in conscious effort.?(More information can be found in my previous blog.)

3. We?re more creativity when thinking about others

Creativity in the business world is increasingly important. Creativity often involves viewing things from different perspectives. New findings show that we are more creative when we think of others solving problems instead of ourselves.

To test this, professors Evan Polman and Kyle Emich presented 137 undergraduates with this riddle: ??A prisoner was attempting to escape from a tower. He found a rope in his cell that was half as long enough to permit him to reach the ground safely. He divided the rope in half, tied the two parts together, and escaped. How could he have done this??

Half the participants were asked to imagine themselves as the prisoner locked inside the tower (we?ll call them the ?prisoner group?) and the other half were asked to imagine someone else trapped in the prison (?imaginary group?). In the prisoner group, 48% of participants solved the riddle, but in the imaginary group, 66% were able to solve the riddle. In a second experiment, the same professors asked participants to draw an alien that someone else might use to write about in a short story. In a third, participants had to come up with gift ideas for themselves, someone close to them, and someone they barely knew.

In the results across all three experiments, Polman and Emich found that participants were more creative or had better solutions when thinking for someone else. This is an intriguing finding with many implications and applications for creative problem solving. Just try to imagine someone else coming up with good ideas for using this finding?

4. It?s not napping, it?s constructive rest

We live in a time when where more people are staying connected on vacations. People have forgotten how important it is for your mind to rejuvenate. Research shows that naps improve productivity?a growing body of evidence shows that?taking regular breaks?from mental tasks improves productivity and creativity ? and that skipping breaks can lead to stress and exhaustion.

(I?ll be right back?zZz)

John P. Trougakos, an assistant management professor at the University of Toronto Scarborough and the Rotman School of Management, compares the brain to any other muscle in the body. Similarly to how muscles become fatigued after repeated and sustained use, so does the brain after sustained mental exertion.? The brain needs a rest period before it can recover he explains.

There is no need to take a break if you?re on a roll though, Trougakos advises. For some people, working over an extended period can be revitalizing?you get into a zone. It is only when you?re forcing yourself to go on that you should stop.

Research from the University of Notre Dame even shows that sleeping shortly after learning new information is the most beneficial for recall.

Three Afghans dead in new blast at U.S. base in Afghan east

KHOST, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed three people in an attack on a U.S. base in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the same base where a suicide bomb attack killed seven CIA employees three years ago.

The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in the eastern town of Khost, saying they had sent a suicide bomber driving a van packed with explosives to the base.

"The target was those who serve Americans at that base," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Afghanistan's NATO-led force said the bomber did not get into the base nor breach its perimeter. Police said the three dead were Afghans who were outside the base, which is beside a military airport.

The al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, widely regarded as the most dangerous U.S. foe in Afghanistan, is active in Khost province, which is on the Pakistani border.

After more than a decade of war, Taliban insurgents are still able to strike strategic military targets, and launch high-profile attacks in the capital, Kabul, and elsewhere.

Three years ago, an al Qaeda-linked Jordanian double-agent killed seven CIA employees and a Jordanian intelligence officer in a suicide bombing at the same base in Khost, known as Forward Operating Base Chapman.

It was the second deadliest attack in CIA history.

Afghan police official General Abdul Qasim Baqizoy, the Khost police chief, said no CIA agents were hurt on Wednesday.

Afghan authorities are scrambling to improve security across the country before the U.S. combat mission ends in 2014.

Besides pressure from the Taliban, U.S.-led NATO forces also face a rising number of so-called insider attacks, in which Afghan forces turn their weapons on Western troops they are supposed to be working with.

On Monday, an Afghan policewoman killed a U.S. police adviser at the Kabul police headquarters, raising troubling questions about the direction of the war.

It appeared to be the first time that a woman member of Afghanistan's security forces carried out such an attack.

On Tuesday, Afghan officials said the woman has an Iranian passport and moved to Afghanistan 10 years ago. There was no suggestion that Iran was involved in the attack on the American.

Officials suspect she may have been recruited by al Qaeda or the Taliban, and had intended to also kill Afghan police officials.

China consumers driving economic rebound: survey

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's consumers are leading an uneven recovery in the world's second biggest economy that has retailers expecting stronger sales in six months, early results of a national survey showed on Wednesday.

The China Beige Book survey of more than 2,000 executives revealed that the retail sector had the strongest revenue growth and business expectations in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The survey broadly detected a mild economic recovery with the hard-hit sectors of real estate, mining and manufacturing - to a lesser extent - joining retail at the head of the upswing.

"The revenue growth pickup was notable in luxuries and durable goods - furniture, appliances, and autos," said the survey, conducted between October 26 and December 2 by New York-based CBB International and based on the U.S. Federal Reserve's economic report of the same name.

"Retailers' mood remains quite hopeful, with 72 percent forecasting higher sales in six months, up 4 points on last quarter. A remarkably low 6 percent foresee declines," it said, adding that 61 percent of retailers reported higher sales in the Q4 survey than in Q3.

The biggest bounces were seen in coastal Guangdong province, Beijing, the northeast and central regions of China - locations which Q3's survey found had the biggest spending falls.

The retail rebound was not evenly distributed, however, with Shanghai and the southwest region recording falls in spending.

The survey's findings are reflected in the most recent raft of economic indicators from China, revealing a mild rebound taking hold in Q4, and in policymaker comments.

China's retail sales grew 14.9 percent year-on-year in November, ahead of the 14.6 percent forecast in a Reuters poll.

China is on course to end 2012 with the slowest full year of growth since 1999 and while the 7.7 percent rate forecast in a benchmark Reuters poll is way above the world's other major economies, it is far below the roughly 10 percent annual growth seen for most of the last 30 years.

Weakness in the external environment remains a key drag on an economy in which exports generated 31 percent of gross domestic product in 2011, according to World Bank data, and where an estimated 200 million jobs are supported by foreign investment, or in factories producing for overseas markets.

RECOVERING, REBALANCING

The upside to the patchiness of the recovery is that it is being driven by services, which are calibrated more towards domestic demand. Geographic rebalancing away from prosperous coastal areas was also evident in the survey, with firms in the western region recording the highest revenue growth in Q4.

The survey had mixed findings for labor markets, with a 3 point rise to 34 percent in the proportion of firms citing an increased availability of unskilled labor, while 20 percent said shortages had increased.

Some 34 percent of firms increased their workforces in Q4 from Q3. Wage rises were reported by 52 percent of respondents.

Bankers questioned in the survey said credit conditions eased in Q4, but fewer firms borrowed. Meanwhile, banks and firms said loan rejections rose slightly, to 16 percent, and exposure to companies with excess production capacity was cut.

"Few corporate loans went to new customers: three-fifths of bankers say under 20 percent did ? an astonishingly small number," the survey said.

"Most were debt rollovers or loan increases for existing clients. This is not yet a period of strong expansion."

The China Beige Book survey of face-to-face and telephone interviews compares conditions with the previous quarter and asks respondents to anticipate conditions three and six months ahead.

The survey sample includes executives from manufacturing, retail, service, transport, real estate and construction, farming, and mining. Respondents ran businesses of every size from the micro-level - employing up to 19 staff - to large firms with more than 500 employees. It also canvassed opinions from 160 bank loan officers and branch managers.

A detailed report of the survey's full findings will be published in early January.

J.J. Abrams Says He Turned Down Star Wars Sequel

Lifelong Star Wars fan J.J. Abrams will remain just that.

The writer-director-producer, who has pumped blood into the second iteration of the Mission: Impossible series and fully revived Star Trek for the big screen, told Empire magazine that while he met with new series producer Kathleen Kennedy about involvement in Star Wars: Episode VII, he decided against hopping aboard.

VIDEO: Benedict Cumberbatch Looms Over the 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Teaser Trailer

"There were the very early conversations, and I quickly said that, because of my loyalty to Star Trek and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things," he told the magazine. "I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

Abrams has said that while he grew up as a major Star Wars fan, he was not particularly in love with Star Trek, which made it easier to reboot the saga -- which now stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock -- for the 21st century.

One in US, one in Russia: Young brothers divided

Courtesy Thomas family

John and Renee Thomas with their son, Jack, 7, who was adopted from Russia at the age of 3. Jack is hoping for his brother, Nikoly, now in a Russian orphanage, to join him in the United States.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

This Christmas, the best gift 7-year-old Jack Thomas could get would be the arrival of his little brother, Nikoly, who lives in an orphanage in Kursk, Russia.

"When Jack is asked about his family, he talks about his brother," said his father, John Thomas, speaking from the family?s home in Minnetonka, Minn. "He always asks, 'When is he coming home?' We just tell him we?re waiting for the call."

Jack has been waiting several years, a long time for a little boy. What he doesn?t know is that a feud between politicians in Moscow and Washington could destroy his chance to grow up with his brother.

On Friday, Russian lawmakers passed a bill that would prohibit Americans from adopting Russian children, and if that bill is signed into law by President Vladimir Putin, it would cast doubt on even those adoptions already in the pipeline.

For John Thomas and his wife, Renee ? and very likely hundreds of other expectant American families and Russian children ? the latest political shift could mean?a delay, a new hurdle or a brick wall.

The?U.S. State Department and some high-level officials in Moscow have lambasted the legislation as punishing Russian children?who need families in an effort to retaliate against Washington.

But the bill has gained ground amid a wave of nationalism, fueled by anger over a U.S. human rights bill singling out Russia and by several highly publicized?cases of U.S. adoptions that ended tragically.

Since the end of the Soviet era in 1991, Americans have adopted about 60,000 children from Russia, making it one of the main countries of origin for non-domestic adoptions in the United States, according to U.S.?government statistics.?At the?peak of the trend in 2004, Americans brought?5,862 children into their homes. In 2011, the number was down to 962 ? a product of well-intentioned policy shifts, bureaucracy, corruption and other difficulties.

See the US Action Plan on Children in Adversity

Jack Thomas, at the age of 3, just before he was adopted from Kursk, Russia, by Americans John and Renee Thomas. He is now 7 years old and growing up in an affluent suburb of Minneapolis.

Even with foreign adoptions, which are allowed after giving Russians priority, Russia has an estimated 700,000 children living in institutions, nearly 80,000 of them orphaned, and the rest abandoned or taken away by the state because the parents were judged unfit to take care of them.

The?Thomases have experienced the painful, stop-start nature of the Russian adoption process in their quest for Nikoly.

It was in December 2008, when they were finalizing their adoption of 3-year-old Eduard, whom they named Jack, that they learned he had a baby brother. They started the adoption application process for Nikoly as soon as they could, after a required waiting period.

Compliments of the Thomas family

Renee Thomas in December 2010 meeting Nikoly at an orphanage in Kursk, Russia. He was 18 months old at the time, and Thomas says she expected he would join the the family within a matter of months. Nikoly is now 4 and remains in institutional care in Russia.

A year later, John and Renee Thomas, who work as an attorney and a building contract negotiator, again flew to Moscow and then went by rail to Kursk to meet Nikoly, whom they call Theodore or Teddy. He was?18 months old. Renee Thomas says she thought it would take about the same amount of time to adopt him as it had with Jack, and expected to travel to Kursk sometime in the spring of 2010 to get him.

The Thomases?are?still waiting.

One of the reasons for delay, they say,?is the horror caused by a woman in Tennessee who put her 7-year-old son, whom she had adopted in Russia, on a one-way flight to Moscow in 2010, with the explanation that the child was "mentally unstable" and she could no longer take care of him.

In another delay that Renee Thomas believes cost their adoption another year, the Russian government shut down adoptions for review and re-accreditation of all adoption agencies that work in Russia.

In addition, the Thomas? dossier has gone before a series of judges in Russia, some of whom have rejected it without a stated reason, and others setting forth requirements that they are not able to meet under U.S. law. Even so, there are Russians trying to help them run the gauntlet, and they figured the problems would get ironed out.

"We expected to be traveling soon" to get Nikolai, said John Thomas. ?

Just last month, when a newly negotiated bilateral adoptions agreement came into effect, designed to smooth out the process and help safeguard adopted children, things appeared to be looking up.

"These adoptive parents have really been through the ringer," said Johnson. "This was a bilateral treaty signed by our two governments. We really celebrated it. I thought we could turn our attention to other countries. But we?re really back to Russia again."

Kids pay in human rights spat
The ban that passed the Russian parliament grew out of a dispute over human rights.

On Nov. 16, the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act passed by a landslide in the U.S. House and Senate. Magnitsky was a 37-year-old lawyer who exposed massive fraud allegedly committed by a group of Russian officials. He was arrested and died in police custody 11 months later under suspicious circumstances. Among other things, the bill denies visas and freezes assets of the Russian officials implicated by Magnitsky.

The new U.S. law sparked an angry reaction from Moscow and fueled popular anti-American sentiment.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims the U.S. is "poisoning ties" between the two countries with a law that bans Russians who abuse human rights and is backing a Russian draft law banning adoption by Americans. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Vladimir Putin said that the law singling out Russia "contaminates our relations."

Russian legislators then drafted a bill to counter the U.S. law, with provisions restricting organizations and individuals linked to the United States.

Just before the first vote in the Duma, the proposed ban on American adoptions of Russian children was tacked on as an amendment. The legislation was named after 21-month-old Dima Yakovlev, a Russian boy who died in Virginia after his adoptive father left him alone in a hot SUV for nine hours.

Americans may lose right to adopt Russian kids

After the Duma approved the legislation on Friday, the U.S. State Department registered its disapproval.

"If Russian officials have concerns about the implementation of (the adoption) agreement, we stand ready to work with them to improve it and remain committed to supporting inter-country adoptions between our two countries," said acting State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell. "The welfare of children is simply too important to be linked to political aspects of our relationship."

The bill is now heading for Putin?s desk for his signature.

Compliments of the Thomas family

John Thomas and his son, Jack, who was adopted from Russia at the age of 3, in an undated picture taken at their home in Minnetonka, Minn.

Opponents of the ban are still hoping that the president will veto the bill, despite his comments while campaigning for re-election that?U.S. adoptions should no longer be allowed. More recently he has remained silent on the issue.

Over the past week, Russian opponents of the ban have launched petitions and small protests at the parliament building, and several high-level officials have registered strong opposition to it, including Russia?s foreign minister and education minister.

Johnson of the National Council for Adoption says he?s hoping the domestic opposition will dissuade Putin from signing the adoption ban into law.

"One good thing that?s happening ? is a movement brought on by Russian citizens and the foreign minister who has spoken out against this legislation ? saying it?s not the right way to stick it to America,? he said. "Hopefully more politicians will feel comfortable speaking out."

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com

Barring that, he said, he hopes Russia will at least make provisions to finalize the adoptions that are already in process.

"There is a precedent ? to negotiate pipeline cases," he said, citing examples in Guatemala and Kyrgystan. "But given the animosity that Russians feel towards this, I hope that?s not a conversation we have to have."

For the Thomases,?despite politics, the adoption effort is now in overdrive. They understand that Nikoly, who turned 4 in June, could be moved at any time ?? and in fact may have been moved already to a Russian institution for children as old as 18.

"That's major," said John Thomas. "That's where bad things start to happen."

For Renee Thomas, her greatest fear is that the boys will not be allowed to grow up together.?But she tries to stay positive for Jack.

"????This morning as I was making him breakfast, he said 'Mom, wouldn't it be great if we woke up Christmas morning and Santa left presents and Teddy under the tree?' My response was 'Let's hope for next year.'"

Egypt constitution passes with 63.8 percent

(AP) ? The head of Egypt's election commission says the new constitution has passed with a 63.8 percent "yes" vote in a referendum.

According to official results announced Tuesday, 32.9 percent of voters participated.

The announcement turns the Islamist-drafted charter into the country's first constitution after the uprising that forced Hosni Mubarak out of office after nearly 30 years of authoritarian rule.

The opposition had campaigned against the constitution, charging that it will usher in Islamic rule in Egypt and restrict freedoms. It has vowed to challenge the results.

Judge Samir Abou el-Maati, the head of the electoral commission, denied allegations that judicial supervision was lacking in the vote.

The official results closely mirror unofficial results announced by the Muslim Brotherhood, the main group that backed the charter.

Editorial: All I want for Christmas is a new HTC Nexus

Editorial All I want for Christmas is a new HTC Nexus

To this day, I remain in love with my HTC One X, but its fate has already been sealed. Soon enough, this fast and beautiful smartphone is going to find a new life in a drawer that holds my spare change, sunglasses, checkbook and various receipts. Is it wrong to relegate one of the best phones on the planet to my stash of odds and ends? Perhaps, but the past few months have taught me that excellent hardware alone doesn't make a device that's sufficient for enthusiasts.

Like many, I've been waiting for an upgrade to Jelly Bean ever since HTC first promised it back in July. I have no doubt that the company is working hard to prepare the Android 4.1 update for its customers, but the software is already past its expiration date. Google has moved onto something better. Quite frankly, I'm no longer willing to perpetually live behind the curve. I want to play with new toys as they come out, and that's wholly impossible outside of the Nexus ecosystem.

Why should HTC care about my personal revelation, or the desire of anyone else who wants to stay on the cutting edge? Well, I'd like to offer the simple suggestion that enthusiasts matter. Take any introductory marketing class and you'll learn the early adopters -- in other words, the nerds who like playing with the very latest stuff -- set trends and influence others. Companies should be falling over themselves to cater to this influential segment, and yet within the Android ecosystem, that's the exception to the rule. There's only one device for sale today that's suitable for enthusiasts, and it's high time for that to change.

How Much Did You Save and Earn This Year? - Budgeting and ...

Happy holidays! As we approach the final week of the year, take a moment to look back on all the cost-cutting and income-producing measures you took this year.

Did you switch to a more suitable insurance premium? Did you switch to mutual funds or index funds with lower fees? Did you start using CFL bulbs? Did you downgrade your cable package, or start cooking more meals at home? Add up the cumulative savings. It may amount to more than you think.

Similarly, look at all the ways you earned side income. Did you do freelance or consulting work on the side? Did you babysit or do home-repair jobs? Add up you earnings, even if it "only" amounted to an extra $50 or $100 a month. Then combine that number with the amount you saved. What an impact!

Did you not make any major savings or earnings this year? Start looking to ways you can improve your bottom line next year.

From Web Designer To Internet Marketer

From Web Designer To Internet Marketer

Internet is full of opportunities, especially if you're in web design and development business. Everyone needs a website, and plenty of people don't know how to make it. That's when those who know how to do it often get started with their business of building sites for others. It can be a cosy job - you can do it from home, without boss, and be well paid if you have good clients, but also, it can be a stressful job - clients that don't know what they want, but always ask for changes while building site, tight deadlines and unslept nights of work. As many jobs, it has it's upsides and downsides. But the bottom line, in most cases, is - you get paid for the project once, and that's it. It's basically an earned income - active income.

Most of web designers and developers have to be good at that field anyway, to make good sites for their clients, but, they're probably unaware of the way they can use their talents to make residual, long-term online income. The business of internet marketing involves site building, and it can be a real bonus if you're professional in it, but is focuses around giving reasons for site's visitors to want to know more and eventually buy products, if you're in affiliate marketing, which is the easiest internet marketing segment to reach into.

Affiliate marketing is a business you'll enjoy doing once get into it, because it allows you to easily merge your favorite hobbies and passions with earning money. Main story of success behind it is quite simple; choose a niche you love and enjoy working with, build up a site about that niche, or a product within it, then learn to promote the site to get traffic and earn from commissions when visitors opt in from your affiliate link.

For example, if you enjoy photography, you can start a website talking about something related to photography - you'll have to choose a niche that has enough demand by surfers and low competition. Then write and/or let others write for the site and create enough ideal content. Put your affiliate links and affiliate products on your site, also related to the topic you'll work with. Then get free traffic from link building, article marketing, or search engine optimization. You'll get surprised with the financial potential of this type of work. If your site has good enough conversion rate, you can profit a lot from just 100 visitors a day. You can easily replicate the process with other niches. The more successful sites you'll have, the better of your bank account will get.

Among all the reasons to get in the internet marketing, or joining valuable affiliate marketing communities, is that it's a permanent residual income opportunity, meaning, your links remain online always, so there will always be a chance that someone opts in from them.

You'll find plent of reasons to do this type of job along the way, but at least learning more about it is a good step, to get another benefit from your web development talent.

Full text of Pope's address to the Curia | CatholicHerald.co.uk

Dear Cardinals, Brother Bishops and Priests, Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is with great joy that I meet you today, dear Members of the College of Cardinals, Representatives of the Roman Curia and the Governorate, for this traditional event in the days leading up to the feast of Christmas. I greet each one of you cordially, beginning with Cardinal Angelo Sodano, whom I thank for his kind words and for the warm good wishes that he extended to me on behalf of all present. The Dean of the College of Cardinals reminded us of an expression that appears frequently during these days in the Latin liturgy: Prope est iam Dominus, venite, adoremus! The Lord is already near, come, let us adore him! We too, as one family, prepare ourselves to adore the Child in the stable at Bethlehem who is God himself and has come so close as to become a man like us. I willingly reciprocate your good wishes and I thank all of you from my heart, including the Papal Representatives all over the world, for the generous and competent assistance that each of you offers me in my ministry.

Once again we find ourselves at the end of a year that has seen all kinds of difficult situations, important questions and challenges, but also signs of hope, both in the Church and in the world. I shall mention just a few key elements regarding the life of the Church and my Petrine ministry. First of all, there were the journeys to Mexico and Cuba ? unforgettable encounters with the power of faith, so deeply rooted in human hearts, and with the joie de vivre that issues from faith. I recall how, on my arrival in Mexico, there were endless crowds of people lining the long route, cheering and waving flags and handkerchiefs. I recall how, on the journey to the attractive provincial capital Guanajuato, there were young people respectfully kneeling by the side of the road to receive the blessing of Peter?s Successor; I recall how the great liturgy beside the statue of Christ the King made Christ?s kingship present among us ? his peace, his justice, his truth. All this took place against the backdrop of the country?s problems, afflicted as it is by many different forms of violence and the hardships of economic dependence. While these problems cannot be solved simply by religious fervour, neither can they be solved without the inner purification of hearts that issues from the power of faith, from the encounter with Jesus Christ. And then there was Cuba ? here too there were great liturgical celebrations, in which the singing, the praying and the silence made tangibly present the One that the country?s authorities had tried for so long to exclude. That country?s search for a proper balancing of the relationship between obligations and freedom cannot succeed without reference to the basic criteria that mankind has discovered through encounter with the God of Jesus Christ.

As further key moments in the course of the year, I should like to single out the great Meeting of Families in Milan and the visit to Lebanon, where I consigned the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation that is intended to offer signposts for the life of churches and society in the Middle East along the difficult paths of unity and peace. The last major event of the year was the Synod on the New Evangelization, which also served as a collective inauguration of the Year of Faith, in which we commemorate the opening of the Second Vatican Council fifty years ago, seeking to understand it anew and appropriate it anew in the changed circumstances of today.

All these occasions spoke to fundamental themes of this moment in history: the family (Milan), serving peace in the world and dialogue among religions (Lebanon) and proclaiming the message of Jesus Christ in our day to those who have yet to encounter him and to the many who know him only externally and hence do not actually recognize him. Among these broad themes, I should like to focus particularly on the theme of the family and the nature of dialogue, and then to add a brief observation on the question of the new evangelization.

The great joy with which families from all over the world congregated in Milan indicates that, despite all impressions to the contrary, the family is still strong and vibrant today. But there is no denying the crisis that threatens it to its foundations ? especially in the western world. It was noticeable that the Synod repeatedly emphasized the significance of the family as the authentic setting in which to hand on the blueprint of human existence. This is something we learn by living it with others and suffering it with others. So it became clear that the question of the family is not just about a particular social construct, but about man himself ? about what he is and what it takes to be authentically human. The challenges involved are manifold. First of all there is the question of the human capacity to make a commitment or to avoid commitment. Can one bind oneself for a lifetime? Does this correspond to man?s nature? Does it not contradict his freedom and the scope of his self-realization? Does man become himself by living for himself alone and only entering into relationships with others when he can break them off again at any time? Is lifelong commitment antithetical to freedom? Is commitment also worth suffering for? Man?s refusal to make any commitment ? which is becoming increasingly widespread as a result of a false understanding of freedom and self-realization as well as the desire to escape suffering ? means that man remains closed in on himself and keeps his ?I? ultimately for himself, without really rising above it. Yet only in self-giving does man find himself, and only by opening himself to the other, to others, to children, to the family, only by letting himself be changed through suffering, does he discover the breadth of his humanity. When such commitment is repudiated, the key figures of human existence likewise vanish: father, mother, child ? essential elements of the experience of being human are lost.

The Chief Rabbi of France, Gilles Bernheim, has shown in a very detailed and profoundly moving study that the attack we are currently experiencing on the true structure of the family, made up of father, mother, and child, goes much deeper. While up to now we regarded a false understanding of the nature of human freedom as one cause of the crisis of the family, it is now becoming clear that the very notion of being ? of what being human really means ? is being called into question. He quotes the famous saying of Simone de Beauvoir: ?one is not born a woman, one becomes so? (on ne na?t pas femme, on le devient). These words lay the foundation for what is put forward today under the term ?gender? as a new philosophy of sexuality. According to this philosophy, sex is no longer a given element of nature, that man has to accept and personally make sense of: it is a social role that we choose for ourselves, while in the past it was chosen for us by society. The profound falsehood of this theory and of the anthropological revolution contained within it is obvious. People dispute the idea that they have a nature, given by their bodily identity, that serves as a defining element of the human being. They deny their nature and decide that it is not something previously given to them, but that they make it for themselves. According to the biblical creation account, being created by God as male and female pertains to the essence of the human creature. This duality is an essential aspect of what being human is all about, as ordained by God. This very duality as something previously given is what is now disputed. The words of the creation account: ?male and female he created them? (Gen 1:27) no longer apply. No, what applies now is this: it was not God who created them male and female ? hitherto society did this, now we decide for ourselves. Man and woman as created realities, as the nature of the human being, no longer exist. Man calls his nature into question. From now on he is merely spirit and will. The manipulation of nature, which we deplore today where our environment is concerned, now becomes man?s fundamental choice where he himself is concerned. From now on there is only the abstract human being, who chooses for himself what his nature is to be. Man and woman in their created state as complementary versions of what it means to be human are disputed. But if there is no pre-ordained duality of man and woman in creation, then neither is the family any longer a reality established by creation. Likewise, the child has lost the place he had occupied hitherto and the dignity pertaining to him. Bernheim shows that now, perforce, from being a subject of rights, the child has become an object to which people have a right and which they have a right to obtain. When the freedom to be creative becomes the freedom to create oneself, then necessarily the Maker himself is denied and ultimately man too is stripped of his dignity as a creature of God, as the image of God at the core of his being. The defence of the family is about man himself. And it becomes clear that when God is denied, human dignity also disappears. Whoever defends God is defending man.

At this point I would like to address the second major theme, which runs through the whole of the past year from Assisi to the Synod on the New Evangelization: the question of dialogue and proclamation. Let us speak firstly of dialogue. For the Church in our day I see three principal areas of dialogue, in which she must be present in the struggle for man and his humanity: dialogue with states, dialogue with society ? which includes dialogue with cultures and with science ? and finally dialogue with religions. In all these dialogues the Church speaks on the basis of the light given her by faith. But at the same time she incorporates the memory of mankind, which is a memory of man?s experiences and sufferings from the beginnings and down the centuries, in which she has learned about the human condition, she has experienced its boundaries and its grandeur, its opportunities and its limitations. Human culture, of which she is a guarantee, has developed from the encounter between divine revelation and human existence. The Church represents the memory of what it means to be human in the face of a civilization of forgetfulness, which knows only itself and its own criteria. Yet just as an individual without memory has lost his identity, so too a human race without memory would lose its identity. What the Church has learned from the encounter between revelation and human experience does indeed extend beyond the realm of pure reason, but it is not a separate world that has nothing to say to unbelievers. By entering into the thinking and understanding of mankind, this knowledge broadens the horizon of reason and thus it speaks also to those who are unable to share the faith of the Church. In her dialogue with the state and with society, the Church does not, of course, have ready answers for individual questions. Along with other forces in society, she will wrestle for the answers that best correspond to the truth of the human condition. The values that she recognizes as fundamental and non-negotiable for the human condition she must propose with all clarity. She must do all she can to convince, and this can then stimulate political action.

In man?s present situation, the dialogue of religions is a necessary condition for peace in the world and it is therefore a duty for Christians as well as other religious communities. This dialogue of religions has various dimensions. In the first place it is simply a dialogue of life, a dialogue of being together. This will not involve discussing the great themes of faith ? whether God is Trinitarian or how the inspiration of the sacred Scriptures is to be understood, and so on. It is about the concrete problems of coexistence and shared responsibility for society, for the state, for humanity. In the process, it is necessary to learn to accept the other in his otherness and the otherness of his thinking. To this end, the shared responsibility for justice and peace must become the guiding principle of the conversation. A dialogue about peace and justice is bound to pass beyond the purely pragmatic to an ethical quest for the values that come before everything. In this way what began as a purely practical dialogue becomes a quest for the right way to live as a human being. Even if the fundamental choices themselves are not under discussion, the search for an answer to a specific question becomes a process in which, through listening to the other, both sides can obtain purification and enrichment. Thus this search can also mean taking common steps towards the one truth, even if the fundamental choices remain unaltered. If both sides set out from a hermeneutic of justice and peace, the fundamental difference will not disappear, but a deeper closeness will emerge nevertheless.

Two rules are generally regarded nowadays as fundamental for interreligious dialogue:

1. Dialogue does not aim at conversion, but at understanding. In this respect it differs from evangelization, from mission;
2. Accordingly, both parties to the dialogue remain consciously within their identity, which the dialogue does not place in question either for themselves or for the other.

These rules are correct, but in the way they are formulated here I still find them too superficial. True, dialogue does not aim at conversion, but at better mutual understanding ? that is correct. But all the same, the search for knowledge and understanding always has to involve drawing closer to the truth. Both sides in this piece-by-piece approach to truth are therefore on the path that leads forward and towards greater commonality, brought about by the oneness of the truth. As far as preserving identity is concerned, it would be too little for the Christian, so to speak, to assert his identity in a such a way that he effectively blocks the path to truth. Then his Christianity would appear as something arbitrary, merely propositional. He would seem not to reckon with the possibility that religion has to do with truth. On the contrary, I would say that the Christian can afford to be supremely confident, yes, fundamentally certain that he can venture freely into the open sea of the truth, without having to fear for his Christian identity. To be sure, we do not possess the truth, the truth possesses us: Christ, who is the truth, has taken us by the hand, and we know that his hand is holding us securely on the path of our quest for knowledge. Being inwardly held by the hand of Christ makes us free and keeps us safe: free ? because if we are held by him, we can enter openly and fearlessly into any dialogue; safe ? because he does not let go of us, unless we cut ourselves off from him. At one with him, we stand in the light of truth.

Finally, at least a brief word should be added on the subject of proclamation, or evangelization, on which the post-synodal document will speak in depth, on the basis of the Synod Fathers? propositions. I find that the essential elements of the process of evangelizing appear most eloquently in Saint John?s account of the calling of two of John the Baptist?s disciples, who become disciples of Jesus Christ (1:35-39). First of all, we have the simple act of proclamation. John the Baptist points towards Jesus and says: ?Behold the Lamb of God!? A similar act is recounted a few verses later. This time it is Andrew, who says to his brother Simon ?We have found the Messiah? (1:41). The first and fundamental element is the straightforward proclamation, the kerygma, which draws its strength from the inner conviction of the one proclaiming. In the account of the two disciples, the next stage is that of listening and following behind Jesus, which is not yet discipleship, but rather a holy curiosity, a movement of seeking. Both of them, after all, are seekers, men who live over and above everyday affairs in the expectation of God ? in the expectation that he exists and will reveal himself. Stimulated by the proclamation, their seeking becomes concrete. They want to come to know better the man described as the Lamb of God by John the Baptist. The third act is set in motion when Jesus turns round, approaches them and asks: ?What do you seek?? They respond with a further question, which demonstrates the openness of their expectation, their readiness to take new steps. They ask: ?Rabbi, where are you staying?? Jesus? answer ?Come and see!? is an invitation to walk with him and thereby to have their eyes opened with him.

The word of proclamation is effective in situations where man is listening in readiness for God to draw near, where man is inwardly searching and thus on the way towards the Lord. His heart is touched when Jesus turns towards him, and then his encounter with the proclamation becomes a holy curiosity to come to know Jesus better. As he walks with Jesus, he is led to the place where Jesus lives, to the community of the Church, which is his body. That means entering into the journeying community of catechumens, a community of both learning and living, in which our eyes are opened as we walk.

?Come and see!? This saying, addressed by Jesus to the two seeker-disciples, he also addresses to the seekers of today. At the end of the year, we pray to the Lord that the Church, despite all her shortcomings, may be increasingly recognizable as his dwelling-place. We ask him to open our eyes ever wider as we make our way to his house, so that we can say ever more clearly, ever more convincingly: ?we have found him for whom the whole world is waiting, Jesus Christ, the true Son of God and true man?. With these sentiments, I wish you all from my heart a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.
