Look, this part's simple: If you weren't sold on 3D displays a year ago, the Optimus 3D Max probably isn't going to change your mind now. It's very much the same experience. But LG has thrown real-time editing of 3D (and 2D) videos into the mix. The camera shutter button and 2D/3D toggle have been merged. Very cool stuff.

But it's software tweaks that really make the difference here. In addition to the video editing, the 3D Max has the ability to convert standard 2D applications to 3D applications. Something like Angry Birds, for example works, and actually it's almost a better experience than dedicated 3D games because it's not quite as in-your-face. Google Earth in 3D? Very cool.

Another interesting upgrade is real-time range-finding. Because the space between the dual-cameras is a fixed distance, some simple triangulation can be done, and the phone can tell you the distance to a given object in real time. Or, it can give you the distance between two objects. Dunno how much we'd use that in our daily lives, but it's cool to see.

Syrian troops said to halt shelling as some wounded are evacuated

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- BEIRUT - Syrian Arab Red Crescent workers rescued a small number of wounded civilians Friday from the hard-hit Baba Amr neighborhood of the city of Homs as representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian government negotiated a cease-fire that would allow still larger evacuations.

The barrage of mortar and rocket fire that had rained down on the neighborhood came to a halt apparently for the first time in three weeks as the negotiations took place.

Two journalists wounded Wednesday in a hail of fire that killed two of their colleagues were apparently not among the seven women and children rescued Friday and taken to a local Homs hospital. But diplomatic efforts to bring the wounded journalists to safety were continuing, and a Red Cross spokesman in Damascus said Red Cross officials were trying to "evacuate all persons in need of help with no exception whatsoever."

It was unclear whether that would include not just the journalists, Edith Bouvier of France and Paul Conroy of Britain, but also wounded anti-government fighters.

Homs has become the most deadly city in Syria as the government of President Bashar Assad has sought to end a rebellion that began last year. A halt to the shelling in Homs, even for a brief period, would mark a break in the government's furious assault after weeks of bloodshed. At least 120 people have been killed in the past two days in Homs, according to activists, with many bodies remaining trapped under rubble.

Saleh Dabbakeh, the Red Cross spokesman in Syria's capital of Damascus, said he could not say whether the shelling of the area had ceased during the negotiations, but he said the fact that the talks were taking place indicated that it had.

"If we are there and trying to evacuate, I don't think there would be any kind of shelling," he said.

Dabbakeh said there was "trouble and unrest in other parts of the country," but he provided no locations. "It's localized; it's in certain provinces," he said.

Bouvier and Conroy, who entered the country illegally to cover the Syrian army's onslaught against the stronghold of the rebel Free Syrian Army, appeared in a video on Thursday asking to be allowed safe passage out of Baba Amr.

Dabbakeh said Friday's evacuations were not the first since the beginning of the most recent army campaign against Baba Amr. He said that since Feb. 11, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have been able to get two convoys of evacuees out of Homs and three out of the area around the western town of Zabadani.

He also said that Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers have been handing out humanitarian assistance and providing first aid to residents of Homs, Syria's third largest city, at nine distribution points.

"Assistance never really stopped," said Dabbakeh. "There were certain periods of time when it was difficult, sometimes very difficult."

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross was continuing to negotiate an agreement between the Assad regime and opposition representatives for a daily two-hour nationwide "humanitarian pause" in the fighting to allow for deliveries of food, medicines and other supplies to violence-hit towns and cities, he said.

Syrian activists said Friday that the journalists were waiting to be evacuated until there was a diplomatic presence involved.

Writers Circle helps improve creativity ? Griffon News

Colorful compliments and helpful criticism echo in Eder 211 after students read the short stories and poems they have been working hard on aloud. English professor and leader of Writers Circle, Dana Andrews, throws out ?That?s good shit, man,? and ?You can?t teach that? to his ?veterans? that have been with the group for semesters.

English professors Andrews and Meg Thompson were approached by colleague Patricia Donaher in October 2007, who had an idea to create Writers Circle as an extension of the Sigma Tau Delta honor society. Donaher knew Andrews and Thompson had Masters of Fine Arts in creative writing, so she thought they would be perfect for the job.

To Andrews, however, Writers Circle is not a job.

?It?s voluntary; I don?t get paid,? Andrews said, ?but it?s part our job to have service to the department and to the university, and it?s also fun. We get to see budding writers, people who have some talent, stuff like that, so it?s fun.?

It is fun and laid-back, which is why Andrews said Writers Circle is not a place where students should go to get help on academic papers. The point of Writers Circle is to help students improve on their creative writing skills, and creative writing skills only, which is what senior Caroline Johnson enjoys about the group.

?There?s a little more freedom [in Writers Circle],? the member of two and a half years said. ?You get to choose what you want to do, and it?s not a class.?

Anyone is welcome to come and bring projects or scripts they have been working on (whether it be one-act plays, poetry, short stories, etc.) for critiques from other students, Andrews and English professor Ian Roberts, who has taken over for Thompson.

Yes, critiques. Students shouldn?t expect to just get a pat on the back ? Andrews and Roberts are looking to help students develop their writing skills, and one cannot do that without understanding viewpoints from others. However, Andrews? goal is never to ?slam? someone, which students, like longtime member Matthew Kurtz, notices and abides by.

?[Andrews] gives criticism at the right amount,? Kurtz said. ?We make it a point not to say bad stuff for the sake of saying bad stuff. We try our best to be as constructive as possible.?

Andrews likes to see his students gain confidence in their abilities and take command in their work, and after reading a student?s piece, Andrews starts off with the negative comments and ends with the positives.

Kurtz says Writers Circle is all about self-improvement and said Andrews and Roberts encourage students to figure out how to fix weak points in a piece on their own. Kurtz also said the professors also have a lot of experience and provide insight of not just how to write a story, but how to make it presentable for publication.

Writers Circle takes place every Thursday at 12:30 in Eder 211. Andrews is a firm believer that there is a writer in everyone, which is why students don?t have to be in creative writing classes to join the group. Kurtz is a history major, and Johnson is a psychology major. Both students are minoring in creative writing, and they take time out of their day to write.

Ultimately, Kurtz believes Writers Circle is a good way to get feedback and improve on writing skills and thinks students should give Writers Circle a shot.

?It?s a good place whether you?re starting out writing or you?ve been working at it for awhile; it?s a good place for advice. You?re not required to come every week, and it?s very informal, so just come by and bring your stuff.?

To keep user interface of your Windows Home Server 2011 (WHS) web add-in similar to other parts of UI you may need styled blocks like shown on WHS web interface home page. In this post I will show you HTML mark-up and CSS you need to create your own gadget block.

Here is the example of custom gadget-like block from the UI of my WHS YouTube Downloader. There is no out-of-box control or some other UI component you can use on different pages that renders you simple area to show some custom content.

I extracted mark-up and styles of gadget and made my own fixes to make block look nice. Although I?m not very happy because of massive use of tables my solution still works and it is simple to use.

Syrian tells of horror in Homs, then line goes dead

A resident of the besieged Syrian city of Homs said on Friday that he feared for his life, shortly before a blast cut off the conversation he was having with NBC News.

"No one can protect themselves from shelling in (the neighborhood of) Baba Amr," Abu Bakr, 22, told NBC News producer Michele Neubert via Skype as government troops pounded the area. "We just need (to) stop the shelling."

"I'm hungry from two days. I'm eating just some onions (for) two days. That's my life, that's the life in Baba Amr," he said. "Most people here eat just simple things, the plants on ground."

A native of Baba Amr, Bakr is in his second year of university. He studies mechanical engineering.

When asked about his future, he said: "I think I will die."

Minutes later, he said, "(I've) got to go because there is a fire."

Neubert then heard a loud explosion, after which the line went dead.

NBC News has confirmed that Bakr survived the blast.

Earlier in the conversation, Bakr said he had been in the same house where Marie Colvin, an American working for Britain's Sunday Times, and French photographer Remi Ochlik, were killed Wednesday.

'Urgent' need for help
He said the international community must take action.

"It is urgent that you have humanitarian corridor in Syria," he said. "This could save the lives of a lot Syrians."

Two journalists wounded in the same attack that killed Colvin and Ochlik were also awaiting evacuation from Homs. Activists say the army is stopping medical supplies from getting into the city and electricity is cut off for 15 hours a day.

Bakr criticized Russia and China, which have blocked efforts to pressure Assad's regime in the United Nations.

"(On one hand) they are talking about preventing ... external intervention in Syria, and on other hand they are sending the weapons and the mercenaries to Syria to support Assad's crimes," he told NBC News.

Neubert told msnbc.com after the conversation that NBC colleagues had been calling their contacts in Syria to try to find out if Bakr was okay.

"It's so difficult to reach anyone there. It's proving almost impossible to clarify what happened, but we are endeavoring to do so," she said.

As government troops continued to pound rebel-held neighborhoods in Homs, thousands of people in dozens of towns across Syria staged anti-regime protests under the slogan: "We will revolt for your sake, Baba Amr."

Meanwhile, more than 70 countries were taking part in Friday's "Friends of Syria" meeting in Tunisia, which is expected to press President Bashar Assad to agree to a cease-fire and allow for humanitarian aid to reach the areas that have been hardest-hit by his security forces.

American, European and Arab officials have said the group would likely impose harsher sanctions if Assad rejects the cease-fire, and predicted the regime's opponents would grow stronger if Assad remained in power.

The U.N. estimated in January that 5,400 people had been killed in the conflict in 2011.

Hundreds more have died since. Syrian activists say the death toll is more than 7,300. Overall figures cannot be independently confirmed because Syria has prevented most media from operating inside the country.

Assad's security forces blames the uprising on Islamic extremists and armed gangs. The opposition, boosted by army defectors, has increasingly taken up arms against the regime.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? President Hugo Chavez said Tuesday that doctors in Cuba have found a new lesion in the same place where he had cancer surgery last year, and he will require surgery.

"It is a small lesion of about 2 centimeters (less than 1 inch) in diameter, very clearly visible," Chavez told state television.

The announcement throws new uncertainty over the country's politics because the socialist leader is seeking re-election this year, hoping to extend his more than 13 years in power.

He did not say when he would undergo the surgery, other than "in the coming days."

Chavez, 57, said the new surgery should be less complicated than what he underwent in Cuba in June, when doctors removed cancerous tumor from his pelvic region. From July to September, he received four rounds of chemotherapy, both in Cuba and in Venezuela, and he has since said that tests show he is cancer-free.

On Tuesday,he denied rumors the cancer had spread aggresively.

"I completely deny what's going around that I have metastasis in the liver or I don't know where, that the cancer has spread all over my body and that I'm already dying."

He has never specified the cancer's exact nature or location.

Speaking from his home state of Barinas, Chavez said he decided to speak publicly "because there are so many rumors, including rumors (the cancer) has been spreading."

He had been out of public sight since Friday, and unconfirmed reports that he spent the weekend in Cuba prompted a denial Monday from Communications Minister Andres Izarra.

"Regarding the rumors, dirty war from the gutter," Izarra tweeted.

In recent weeks, Chavez has recovered the hair that he shaved while undergoing chemotherapy and he has appeared vigorous, returning to his full schedule of activities, including marathon television appearances.

He has assured Venezuelans that he is in fine shape to gain what would be his third re-election in Oct. 7 elections against opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.

"I am in good physical shape to confront this new battle," Chavez said, adding that he would provide Venezuelans with more details after meeting with his Cabinet on Wednesday.

He did not mention the extent to which the surgery and recuperation from it might affect his campaigning.

How the REO to Rental Program Will Impact the Economy | The ...

At RentJuice, we see the economic contribution of small businesses ? property managers, local property owners, and real estate brokers ? who make money by facilitating rentals every day. In fact, the vast majority of homes and apartments on our platform belong to owners who only have a few properties, and the lion?s share of offices who are building businesses on the RentJuice platform have only a handful of leasing agents.

Since its launch in 2009, our team has witnessed the intense nationwide struggle to be successful in selling homes. Many real estate pros have turned to rentals as a source of income during these challenging times. With millions of homes in or facing foreclosure, a greater concentration of homes now belong to mortgage loan servicers as ?real estate owned? (REO) properties. The Wall Street Journal reported that Fannie and Freddie owned about 180,000 homes at the end of September, and FHA owns another 35,000. Those homes, if released in mass for purchase, would continue to depress home prices across the country and further damage local businesses built on investing in real estate.

With that perspective, I?d like to share our views on the program being initiated by the government to stimulate housing rentals and defer the flood of foreclosed homes, often called the ?REO to Rent? program. REO properties will be released to investors who can purchase homes if they commit to hold the properties and rent them for a specified period. It is our belief that this program is both necessary for stabilization and improvement of the housing market, and a massive economic opportunity for the entire real estate ecosystem.

First, we think this program positively addresses known economic trends in the rental and for sale markets. Economic research like S&P/Case-Shiller to Zillow?s Home Value Index all displayed continued declines in home prices in 2011. While total foreclosures declined last year, many attribute the slowdown in foreclosure to a temporary delay in processing alone. At the same time, rents increased about 2% to $1,064 in the US, according to research firm Reis, with steady rents being sustained mainly in areas simultaneously hit hard by unemployment. Property management software company RealPage, in its quarterly earnings call just yesterday, noted an imbalance in supply and demand, and forecasted increased lease prices for their 7.2 million rental units in the coming year. Adding new rental supply and damming the foreclosure flood seem irrefutably necessary. This action keeps rentals affordable, loosens very tight vacancy rates, and raises the floor on potential home prices.

Second, this program enables an entire housing ecosystem to be more active. According to the Commerce Department, new home construction rose just 1.5% in January, and when you exclude multifamily development, single-family home construction was down 1%. That not only affects builders, but also the team of? people who convert a lot of land into an occupied home ? from carpenters and electricians to real estate brokers and web designers. The investors who purchase REO properties will have to partner with companies or individuals who can help lease and maintain the properties. No hedge fund or private equity firm has an in-house property management arm that can fix leaky faucets or broken air conditioners. Homes that have been vacant for months or years need to be improved, cleaned, and inspected. No one can execute on this strategy alone, and we think the pool of income generated by rolling out this program will have far-reaching effects across a number of service industries.

Indeed, rentals can literally reshape a small and slow real estate business amidst difficult real estate sales. Take Jorge Guerra of Real Estate Sales Force, a user of RentJuice in the hard hit South Florida real estate market where I grew up. An entire supply chain must mobilize to make this policy effective.
