Having ?The Talk? About Childhood ObesityYour Health Journal ...

From The Seattle Times?..

An Atlanta hospital provides tips on talking to your child about obesity and on adopting a healthful lifestyle

Virginia Smith dreaded having ?the talk? with her daughter, Ramsey.

She was concerned about her daughter?s weight. Still, she didn?t want to hurt Ramsey?s self-esteem or say anything that could spark issues of negative body image.

So Smith decided not to frame the conversation around weight.

?I talked about being healthy and about making changes we could do as a family,? Smith said. ?I told her I want her to live a long, happy, healthy life.?

Since that conversation about two years ago, Smith and her daughter, now 13, have adopted a lifestyle overhaul: They exercise, drink water instead of soda and eat more fruits and vegetables.

Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta wants to help more of these transformations take place.

The hospital has launched a website (www.strong4life.com) providing parents with tools and tips for having ?the talk.? The website?s offerings include a database of doctors trained to counsel families struggling with weight issues, healthy recipes and an online-health assessment. The hospital also has a clinic and offers a summer camp for overweight children.

This latest push to fight obesity comes about a year after Children?s controversial ad campaign featuring black-and-white photos of obese children on billboards with messages such as: ?It?s hard to be a little girl if you?re not.? Dr. Stephanie Walsh, the medical director of child wellness at Children?s, said the campaign was designed to help people realize that childhood obesity is a crisis.

(AP) ? Call this one Music City Mayhem.

The Tennessee Titans are winless no more after an unforgettable overtime victory over Detroit featuring an endless stream of big plays, some suspect officiating and a huge mistake by the Lions on the final play.

Rob Bironas kicked a 26-yard field goal in overtime, and the Titans stopped backup quarterback Shaun Hill on fourth-and-1 at the Tennessee 7 to finally pull out a 44-41 win Sunday where the Lions messed up trying to draw the defense offside.

"Obviously, there was a miscommunication, or I don't know what you call it, from an enforcement standpoint," coach Jim Schwartz said.

The Titans (1-2) blew a 20-9 halftime lead in a game featuring wild scoring swings. They became the first NFL team to score five touchdowns of 60 yards or longer in a single game.

"Piece of cake," Titans quarterback Jake Locker said with a smile.

Detroit scored 18 straight points, then Tennessee answered with 21 points before the Lions scored the final 14 of regulation in a span of 18 seconds? the first team to do that and force overtime in league history.

The touchdown that forced overtime came on a tipped desperation pass after Detroit recovered an onside kick and got an assist from the replacement officials who did not review a possible turnover.

"Both of us looked at each other and said, 'We've never been through something like this in our lives,' " Titans coach Mike Munchak said of Detroit coach Jim Schwartz, a former colleague in Nashville. "It's hard to put in words what to say about that. We both could've won in so many ways."

Schwartz's Lions picked up the nickname Comeback Cats last season with four rallies for victory from 13 points or more down.

"I've never been around one like that," Schwartz said.

A total of 46 points came in the fourth period. Then in overtime, Bironas' third field goal put Tennessee ahead to stay after a drive that got its own boost from the officials.

They announced a replay review had overturned their ruling of a catch by Tennessee tight end Craig Stevens, with the ball hitting the ground as he rolled after being hit helmet to helmet by Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch.

After spending several minutes discussing where to place the ball, they put it at the Lions 29, giving the Titans 27 yards. The penalty apparently was marched off from the Detroit 44 instead of the Tennessee 44, where the play started.

The Lions (1-2) lost their second straight when Schwartz decided not to let Jason Hanson kick his fifth field goal. Hill, in for injured Matthew Stafford, was stopped by defensive tackles Jurrell Casey and Sen'Derrick Marks on his sneak, and Tennessee escaped, celebrating wildly even as an official stood over the ball before a replay review was announced.

"I'm very exhausted right now," Casey said.

The Titans had stopped Mikel Leshoure for a 7-yard reception about a foot short on third down. Schwartz said he was preparing to call a timeout to kick the field goal and wanted first to try getting the Titans to jump offside.

"The crowd was loud," Schwartz said. "If they didn't jump, we were just going to take the timeout. The ball ended up getting snapped. We needed that, obviously, to make sure all 11 guys get the calls right there and be able to play it."

Hill took the blame.

"It's up to the quarterback to get all 11 on the same page, for sure," Hill said. "I'll just leave it at that. It was on me."

Players from both teams met in the middle of the field talking and shaking hands before an official finally announced the game that lasted 3 hours, 51 minutes was over.

The game featured six plays of 46 yards or longer, with the Titans having five of those ? all 61 or longer. The Titans even had three of those 71 yards or longer.

Hill's 46-yard TD pass to Titus Young off a ball Titans linebacker Akeem Ayers tried to knock down at the end of regulation tied the game only after some more confusing officiating.

"The guy came out of nowhere and caught the ball," Ayers said.

After Hill tossed a 3-yard TD pass to Calvin Johnson with 18 seconds left, Amari Spievey recovered Detroit's onside kick. Hill threw a short pass to the sideline to Nate Burleson who took at least a step before losing the ball when hit by Titans cornerback Jason McCourty.

An official threw down his bean bag, indicating a change of possession. Titans cornerback Alterraun Verner picked up the ball and started to run to the end zone before another official ran up and called it incomplete.

Because it was in the final 2 minutes, a review is left up to the officials and coaches cannot challenge. No replay review was done.

Officials had other issues in this game, including twice announcing the offense would replay third down when it was obvious the defense wanted to decline a penalty to force fourth down.

"I may not agree with some of the things but ultimately, I thought they had control," Munchak said.

Early on came shades of the most famous play in Titans history, the Music City Miracle to lift them past Buffalo in a January 2000 playoff game. Tommie Campbell caught a lateral from Darius Reynaud on a punt return and ran it 65 yards for a TD in the first quarter for Tennessee.

Reynaud had never thrown a pass in a game going back to high school.

"D-Rey had to make sure that he didn't throw it over my head," Campbell said. "Then after that, everything else worked out."

Jared Cook caught a 61-yard TD pass from Locker in the second period as the Titans went up 20-9 at halftime.

Reynaud also set a Tennessee record returning a kickoff 105 yards to tie it at 27. Ayers then sacked Stafford, forcing the Lions to punt, and Locker found Nate Washington, who plucked the ball from behind cornerback Jacob Lacey's back and ran 71 yards for the go-ahead TD with 3:11 left.

Verner grabbed the ball from Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew and ran it 72 yards on the play Stafford pulled up limping as he chased the cornerback. That seemed like the clinching TD with 1:16 left in regulation and only wound up setting the scene for more chaos.

Locker finished 29 for 42 for 378 yards and two TDs. Stafford went 33 of 42 for 277 yards and a touchdown.

Notes: Leshoure ran for 100 yards in his NFL debut. The Lions running back missed his rookie season with an Achilles' tendon injury and was suspended for the first two games of this season. ... Campbell got his second career TD off a kick or punt return he did not field. He scored on a reverse off a kickoff last season as a rookie. ... With his third field goal, Hanson passed Matt Stover for fourth all-time with 472s. ... Bironas kicked a 38-yard field goal at the end of the first half to tie the franchise record with his 20th straight kick. He missed a chance to have the record alone when a 41-yarder was wide left in the third quarter. Bironas missed another field goal in the third, the first time he's missed two in a game since Sept. 10, 2009.

Place Name Hierarchies

THANK YOU!!!! I was on the verge of switching to another software until you added this feature. I have been entering every single fact four times in order to view places by hierarchies. All the archives (online and physical) have information organized in hierarchical order, so you just saved me a ton of research time. Now I can view everyone associated with the state of Iowa when I am viewing indexes by the state or narrow it down to the county level when at a county courthouse.

HP unveils first NFC-enabled mouse, various other PC accessories

HP unveils first NFCenabled mouse, various other PC accessories

In addition to unveiling all those laptops, HP just announced a boatload of peripherals. Of the bunch, the most compelling might be the NFC-enabled Touch to Pair Mouse, which, as the name suggests, can be paired with another device simply through tapping. (Good thing lots of computers currently have NFC, right?) If, by chance, you don't have NFC on your laptop -- and you probably don't -- the mouse will function just fine as a regular old Bluetooth device. Look for it in November for $39. Elsewhere on the wireless mouse front, HP announced the X6000 (pictured), which has four-way tilt scrolling and can be used on most surfaces, including glass. That arrives this month for $59. Finally, if your tastes are a bit simpler, there's also the Wireless Mouse X4500 and X5500, which will be available this month for $29 and $39, respectively.

Beyond mice, HP also trotted out the $29 Wireless Classic Desktop keyboard, along with the $49 Wireless Elite v2. For audio lovers, there's the HP Portable Bluetooth Speaker, which will go on sale next month for a cool $79. Eighty bucks (or thereabouts) will also get you a 90W universal power adapter that claims to be compatible with most notebooks. It also has a built-in USB port, allowing you to charge a mobile device at the same time. Rounding out the list is the Webcam HD 4310, an $89 shooter capable of 1080p video, autofocus, autoexposure and three-way video calling. All that in more digestible form in the PR after the break.

4 countries discuss climate change in Brazil

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) ? Representatives of Brazil, South Africa, India and China are meeting to define a common position ahead of November's United Nations' climate change conference in Doha.

The four countries form the bloc known as BASIC that acts jointly in international climate change meetings.

Brazilian negotiator Luiz Alberto Figueiredo says one of the main topics being discussed in the meeting that ends on Friday is the future of the 1997 emission- limiting Kyoto Protocol that requires industrialized countries to slash emissions.

He told reporters that the BASIC bloc wants to extend the Kyoto Protocol, which is due to expire at the end of this year, to 2020.

The protocol is aimed at stemming pollution and global warming that has been opposed by the United States.

Sleep apnea in obese pregnancy women linked to poor maternal and neonatal outcomes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? The newborns of obese pregnant women suffering from obstructive sleep apnea are more likely to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit than those born to obese mothers without the sleep disorder, reports a study published online September 20 in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Sleep apnea, which causes repeated awakenings and pauses in breathing during the night, was also associated with higher rates of preeclampsia in the severely overweight pregnant women, the researchers found.

"Our findings show that obstructive sleep apnea can contribute to poor outcomes for both obese mothers and their babies," said the study's lead author Dr. Judette Louis, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Florida. "Its role as a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes independent of obesity should be examined more closely."

Dr. Louis, who holds a joint appointment in the USF College of Public Health's Department of Community and Family Health, conducted the study while a faculty member at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine. A specialist in maternal-fetal medicine, she worked with researchers from Case Western Reserve, the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine's Center for Evidence-Based Medicine, and Harvard Medical School. She joined USF in April.

The researchers analyzed data for 175 obese pregnant women enrolled in a prospective observational study, which screened prenatal patients at Cleveland's MetroHealth Medical Center for sleep-related breathing disorders. The women were tested for obstructive sleep apnea using an in-home portable device at bedtime.

Perinatal and newborn outcomes for 158 live births, including indications for NICU admissions such as respiratory complications, prematurity and congenital defects, were also reviewed.

Among the study findings:

  • The prevalence of sleep apnea among study participants was 15.4 percent.
  • Compared to the women with no sleep apnea (control group), the group with sleep apnea was heavier and experienced more chronic high blood pressure. This finding was consistent with studies in the general population that have associated sleep-disordered breathing with high blood pressure and weight gain.
  • The women with sleep apnea were more likely than the control group to undergo a cesarean delivery and to develop preeclampsia, a medical condition in which high blood pressure in pregnancy is associated with loss of protein in the urine. Preeclampsia remains one of the most common dangerous medical conditions for both moms and babies.
  • Despite having similar rates of preterm births, the women with sleep apnea delivered offspring more likely to be admitted to the NICU than did their counterparts without sleep apnea. Many of these admissions were due to respiratory distress. The researchers suggest the higher NICU admission rates may be explained in part by the higher C-section rates among the women with sleep apnea, but more study is needed.

Approximately one in five women are obese when they become pregnant, meaning they have a body mass index of at least 30, according to research from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While numerous studies have examined complications associated with obesity in pregnancy -- including high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and cesarean deliveries -- sleep apnea has been underdiagnosed and understudied in this population of women.

The study authors suggest the best way to decrease obesity-related conditions that lead to poor pregnancy outcomes, including sleep apnea, would be to treat obesity before a woman becomes pregnant, but acknowledge that "losing weight is often difficult."

Dr. Louis said the study also points to the need for better ways to screen and treat this common form of sleep-disordered breathing during pregnancy.

The study was supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars program, the Case Western Reserve/Cleveland Clinic CTSA, and the National Center for Research Resources, NIH.

Using The Right Email Marketing Business Solution

Using the Right Email Marketing Business Solution

Have you been so frustrated upon knowing that your email marketing business does not give you the conversion rates you are expecting? Most have complained about being accused of spamming and that they found emails bouncing back to their mail box. This is the dilemma many email marketers face!

What a great feeling it could be to open your mail box and find out that orders are flooded your account! This is when you have taken the opportunity to make use of an all in one email marketing solution that allows you to use the most important resources ? a server with email lists and fully functional software.

The email list is one of the important points to focus on when you do email marketing. This requires you to find an email service provider that will offer you millions of recipients which are regularly updated and that these recipients are indeed your target buyers. The best of all is that, when the provider assures that the emails on the lists have signed up for a third party agreement to receive emails and are not a risk of spam.

The mass email service should have features also that will automate the blasting of emails. Plus, it should have editors and other features that will allow the marketer to create a compelling email which will be very tempting to the readers.

Find email software with a database that allows one to save the drafted email content which can be retrieved for future use. You can create emails with ad layouts that are personalized. Before the ads or emails are sent, you should be provided with a preview to double check the content and easily edit them when necessary.

The email services should be easy to set up and with a user friendly interface. A user needs not to have technical and programming skills to get started. Anybody can use and see results in no time. The provider of the email service should make way for a 24 hours call in assistance so when problems arise, the user can immediately secure help.

Watching TV May Ruin Your Marriage

Watching TV

Thinkstock

If you?re sensing trouble in your marriage, you should probably turn off the TV.

And, no, not so you have more time to take your loved on out for a romantic dinner or something to that effect.

You should shut off the boob tube because television might be giving you an unrealistic expectation of what a healthy relationship is like.

Researchers from Albion college surveyed 390 married couples?on the state of their relationship and also on their impressions of how romance is portrayed on television.

The more a person believed that the idealized love that is often featured on TV is real, the less satisfied they were with their own spouse.

?In this study I found that people who believe the unrealistic portrayals on TV are actually less committed to their spouses and think their alternatives to their spouse are relatively attractive,? Dr. Jeremy Osborn, who authored the study with ran in the journal Mass Communication and Society, explained.

?My hope would be that people would read this article and take a look at their own relationships and the relationships of those around them,? he continued. ?How realistic are your expectations for your partner and where did those expectations come from??

PFT: Schiano not backing down? |? NFL backs Bucs

File photo of New Orleans Saints' Gregg Williams watching his team prepare for their NFL football game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers in New OrleansReuters

Following Monday?s three-hour marathon meeting between Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma and Commissioner Roger Goodell, someone leaked to the media an affidavit signed by former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, which states that Vilma offered $10,000 to anyone who knocked former Vikings quarterback Brett Favre out of the 2009 NFC title game.

At that?s precisely what it says, at paragraph No. 12 on pages 5 to 6 of the document.? (It?s technically a ?declaration,? not an affidavit.? Both are signed under penalty of perjury, but unlike an affidavit a declaration isn?t notarized.)

Its timing raises many fair questions, even if the NFL would prefer that the questions not be asked.? Amazingly, Williams signed the document three days ago, on September 14, 2012.

So here are the questions and issues that Vilma?s lawyer, Peter Ginsberg, likely will be preparing to ask and/or raise.

How did this declaration come to be?

Williams, whom the league previously identified as someone who corroborated the offer, presumably hadn?t previously reduced his words to writing.? Why didn?t he?

Who wrote the declaration?

The declaration consists of a clean, crisp, logical narrative ? the kind of document lawyers routinely write.? So who wrote it?? Williams? lawyer, based on a meeting with Williams?? Or the NFL?s lawyers, based on whatever Williams told the league (or, possibly, the league?s interpretation thereof)?

Why was it written now?

The September 7 ruling of an internal appeals board vacated the suspensions of Vilma and three other players on technical grounds.? The decision gave the league a do-over, and the decision to harvest a declaration from Williams three days before the meeting with Vilma proves that the NFL opted to embrace its mandated Mulligan.

What promises were made to Williams, expressly or implicitly?

It?s fair to ask whether and to what extent Williams has received anything in return for his cooperation.? Did the league hint that he?ll be more likely to be reinstated if he signs the declaration?

Will Williams testify at the internal appeal hearing?

Assuming the NFL once again suspends Vilma, an internal appeals hearing will be conducted.? And it will be impossible to properly probe the nooks and crannies of the Williams declaration unless Williams testifies.? So Williams surely will have to testify, and he will have to be exposed to cross examination.? Otherwise, the declaration will be worthless.

What other declarations have been obtained?

The league possibly didn?t stop with a declaration from Williams.? The league possibly has revisited the question of whether its previously undisclosed whistleblower (widely believed to be former Saints assistant coach Mike Cerullo) should be ?outed? as a witness, given that the undisclosed whistleblower presumably has also corroborated the Vilma offer.

Will Williams ever coach again?

Apart from the cartoonish remarks from Williams prior to the January 2012 playoff game against the 49ers, Williams? execution of a declaration will make it difficult if not impossible for any NFL player to ever respect, listen to, or follow Williams.? Thus, even if the NFL reinstates him after the 2012 season, it will be difficult for the Rams or any other NFL team to employ him as a coach.? At best, Williams will be relegated to the status of consultant, perhaps helping his son, Blake, with game plans and other strategic matters.

What happens next?

Commissioner Roger Goodell will issue a decision regarding the suspensions, and the decision will be appealed, to Goodell.? His final decision will surely be challenged in court, before Judge Helen G. Berrigan.

Will the declaration hold up in court?

That?s perhaps the best question of all.? Vilma?s lawyer undoubtedly will argue that the league should have created and shared the Williams declaration months ago, and that any effort to cobble something together now is inherently suspect and procedurally defective.

In hindsight, Vilma?s lawyer should have declined to meet with Goodell, taking instead the position that the official record of evidence is closed, and that Goodell must merely make a new decision clarifying whether he was issuing the suspensions for conduct detrimental to the game (which he has the sole authority to do under the labor deal), or whether he was punishing the players for salary-cap violations (which he does not have the authority to do).

What should the other players do?

Saints defensive end Will Smith, Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, and free-agent defensive end Anthony Hargrove are due to meet with Goodell on Tuesday.? They should consider refusing to meet, taking the position that the NFL is stuck with the evidence that already has been produced (or not produced), and that Goodell should simply reissue the decisions.

We?ll find out soon enough whether that happens.? For now, though, it?s clear to us that the Williams declaration would have been far more valuable and relevant if it had been written and signed back in February or March.? Though there would still be questions, there wouldn?t be as many ? and they wouldn?t be as compelling.

Fahy Pine to establish dominance in Coral On TV Maiden Trophy - Heat 2 at Romford

Fahy Pine is unlikely to face any trouble whatsoever in booking her place in second round of the Coral On TV Maiden Trophy, getting started at Romford on Monday, September 10, 2012.

Heat 2 will see the black bitch locking horns with five fast and furious hounds. Their names are: Romeo Scout, Rockchase Jamo, Failte Blathnaid, Pennys Peewee and Rebellious Heart. The 400 metres clash is scheduled to begin at 19:58 GMT.

Fahy Pine returned to Romford on August 24th, when she managed to finish among top-3 in a similar contest. She went through plenty of mess in the beginning, but still kept herself prominent right till the end.

K. Crew?s charge performed even better at Henlow at the end of last month. In a 460 metres race, the daughter of Archaton Pine made a strong finish to grab the runner-up place.

After two decent efforts over different distances, she looks to be in good shape. A repeat of the previous two efforts would definitely see her involved today.

Romeo Scout is another interesting candidate. The black dog made his way back to the top level following a superb win on August 27th. Although P. Young?s hound failed to continue his winning run in this class, he did well to seal the second place. The draw is not an issue for the son of Bombastic Shiraz, and if he takes an early advantage, he can easily stay best.

Failte Blathnaid could be well suited by the track and trip. However, we are unsure whether she will be able to make full use of this.

Pennys Peewee may find her kennel mate, Failte Blathnaid, a big hindrance. Rockchase Jamo is young hound, who is still learning the ropes. Today?s race does not look to be his cup of tea. Rebellious Heart lacks a look around, and will have to counter early move. A lazy start will automatically cut down her chances.

Romeo Scout knows how to win a race of this nature. But Fahy Pine is geared up to continue the good work today. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.

Meet My Moderatrix (A booQfest update) ? Steve Emmett

?

On 16th September, as most of you will now be aware, I am appearing at the Northampton booQfest. I?ll be talking about horror, reading from Diavolino, answering questions and signing books. The moderatrix is my friend and fellow horror author Julia Kavan. With just a week to go I thought it would be a good time to drag her in here so that you can get to know her a little bit.

?

Be afraid, very afraid: Moderatrix

S: Welcome, Julia. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that you had been chosen to crack the whip at my event at booQfest. How did you pull this off?
J: I originally approached Morgen Bailey when I heard about booQfest, to offer my help with either promoting the event or perhaps doing something practical at the booQfest itself, as Northampton isn?t too far away from where I live. I also mentioned I?d be stopping by to hear you speak? ?a few days later Daniel Burrows contacted me with the idea of me moderating your session. So, I was just as surprised to be asked as you were to find I was the one assigned to keep in you in line?erm, I mean moderate your session. (Where did I put that whip?)

S: That?ll teach you! I feel honoured to have been asked to speak at this event, especially with so many well-known writers about the place. To tell the truth, my nerves are starting to surface. I?m not quite horrified, but I can sense traces of mild terror. Are you all cool, calm and collected, ready to put down any daring hecklers?
J: As an experienced tutor I am used to speaking in front of people? although it?s been a while since I?ve done so as I?ve been concentrating on my own writing over the last couple of years. I?m certain that the audience will be friendly.

S: I?ll hold you to that. The Festival celebrates gay and lesbian authors (local and national) and their writing. This years? booQfest is also reaching out to a wider audience so that other local writers can use it as a platform to publicise their work even if they do not directly identify with the LGBT community. Do you think there are enough opportunities nationwide for new or local or niche writers to showcase themselves and their work? If not, what would you like to see taking place?
J: I think the number of literary events created by writers themselves is growing. I?ve seen more events advertised recently than I remember seeing for a long time ? after all, the whole point of writing for most authors is for others to read their work or hear/see it performed. In fact I?ve just seen that someone is already arranging a poetry festival in my home city for next year. I don?t think I will be inflicting my poetry on any poor audience, however? it takes horror to a whole new level.

?

I do think it?s a shame that larger bookshops no longer seem to want to support new and local authors ? which is counter-productive, really ? anything that brings customers in to the shop to buy books is surely a good thing (isn?t it?), and they are seen to be supporting new writers? and this week?s new writer could be next months big thing ? but they have to be able to get their books seen. Luckily we have a great independent bookshop near to where I live which puts on regular readings and talks featuring both well known and local authors. With agents unwilling to take as many risks on new writers, wanting only to take on those they see as likely to achieve high sales (and fair enough it is a business they are running? but what happened to the idea of nurturing new talent?) writers are finding other ways to publish and get their stories out there. The literary landscape is changing? I wonder if the tremors started by writers being able to self-publish e-books will at some point develop into a full-blown earthquake.

S: We are certainly living in interesting times, I agree. I imagine that you?re going to kick-off the Q and A session with some probing of your own. What sort of things are you hoping to drag out of me and lay bare for the public?
J: Oh?as if I?d give you an inkling of what I?m going to ask! Where?s the fun in that? But I like to know how people tick?what makes their hearts beat faster?

S: Depends what sort of tick you mean, I suppose. I doubt it?s a big secret that, as moderatrix, you know more or less what I am going to talk about. So, without giving the game away, what would you say my theme is? In other words, if someone is looking at this and wondering whether to come or not, how would you persuade them?
J: Writers are often advised to ?write what you know? ? some readers hearing that piece of wisdom might then look askance at the author of a horror novel, wondering if what they write is how they really think, but, in my view, there is far more to horror than gore, violence and the ability to scare a reader. There?s history and tradition.? I like new horror writers who find ways to blend the old with the new. Diavolino does this in great style and this in an opportunity to discover how.

S: *blushes* Sunday 16th is by its nature going to be about me, but you write extremely taught scary stuff yourself. Why don?t you tell my readers something about yourself, your stories and where they can find you?
J: I grew up reading horror stories and a lot of sci-fi. I also read a lot of non-fiction ? Fortean Times, Erik von D?niken, and magazines like Man, Myth and Magic (that might give away my age ? erm ? they were old, dusty copies J ). I exhausted the local library?s supply of supernatural reference books very quickly ? I was fascinated by anything ?otherworldly?. As a teenager I started writing my own horror (not sure it was terribly horrific ? more like the dark ramblings of a moody teen), but back then I had no thought of trying to get published ? it was just for the fun of playing with words. I returned to writing horror about 12 years ago, again for fun at first, but then I signed up to a creative writing course and started writing a novel. This was followed by a couple of screenplays as well as short stories in between. I still didn?t start submitting to publishers as I found myself teaching a creative writing course for my local college, as well as starting up a writing group for teenagers ? and my time was taken up by that. Sometimes the path to where you want to be can be long and winding! Now I mostly write short stories, but I have a novel which is now being submitted to agents and publishers, and I am just starting work on another. I still write horror and suspense ? I guess I?m just happiest in the dark. To find out more about me and my writing drop in at www.juliakavan.com

?

S: We have a super venue for the event and I?m looking forward to it, despite the nerves. I need to find where to park the car but tell me, are you coming on your broomstick?
J: Tsk, broomsticks are so yesterday, Steve. Bilocation is the way to go now ? you can achieve twice as much in the same time. The question is, which version of me are you going to get on the day? the evil one or the nice one? ?Hmmm, doppelg?nger story comes to mind?

Steve: Two of you? Now that?s an horrific thought if ever there was.

When Se7en came to Taiwan in the past, he visited the night markets with staff and tried many Taiwanese snacks and food. ?I really miss the experience of walking freely at the markets and enjoying eating different foods.? Foods that he wants to eat the most include ?Xiao long bao, pineapple cake and bubble tea/pearl milk tea. The active Se7en is not afraid of putting on weight and says that ?I will eat to my heart?s content before returning to Korea.?

Se7en also said that when the Korean drama ?On Air? which was partly filmed in Taiwan, was broadcasting in Korea, he would watch it whenever he had time. ?There is a famous place in the series called ?Jiu fen? where the red lights come on in the evening. There are lots of snacks alot the streets and I want to experience drinking tea by the countryside and looking out at the night sky.? He says if he has time this trip, he wants to visit Jiufen.

Paul Ryan: Feds shouldn't interfere with states' legalized medical pot

DENVER (AP) ? Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan says the federal government shouldn't interfere with states that have legalized medical marijuana.

The Wisconsin congressman tells KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs that he personally doesn't approve of medical marijuana laws. But he says that states should have the right to choose whether to legalize the drug for medical purposes.

In response to a reporter's question, Ryan said: "It's up to Coloradans to decide."

The interview was taped while Ryan campaigned this week in Colorado Springs and aired Friday.

Colorado is one of 17 states, plus the District of Columbia, that allow medical marijuana.

The Obama administration at first signaled that it wouldn't interfere with state-sanctioned marijuana distribution. But the Justice Department has since angered marijuana activists by shutting down dispensaries in California and Colorado.

Bones of Contention: Disputed Dino Is Judged a Frankensaurus

As if being a fearsome, 70-million-year-old predator wasn't enough, the dinosaur at the center of an international ownership dispute is being called a Frankenstein.

The reason: Attorneys maintain that the fossilized skeleton is made up of bits from multiple dinosaurs belonging to the same species. In response, the federal judge in the case referred to the dinosaur as a kind of "Frankenstein model" of dinosaur parts, according to media reports from Wednesday (Sept. 5).

This description is intended to thwart an attempt by the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan to take possession of the dinosaur and send it to Mongolia. Mongolian President Elbegdorj Tsakhia and paleontologists have maintained that the fossils were taken illegally from that country.

The attorneys making this "Frankenstein" argument represent the Florida fossil dealer Eric Prokopi, who imported and prepared the fossils before attempting to sell them at auction.

Before it went up for auction on May 20, the dinosaur was advertised as a 75 percent complete specimen. Prokopi's attorneys, Peter Tompa and Michael McCullough, are arguing that the 75 percent includes bones from more than one individual dinosaur of the same species, Tarbosaurus bataar, an Asian relative to the North American T. rex. The remaining quarter of the dinosaur is made from plastic molds from other fossil specimens, they maintain. [Paleo-Art: Stunning Illustrations of Dinosaurs]

Here's why they are making this argument: Mongolian law does not allow for the private ownership of fossils, which are considered state property (although Tompa and McCullough question Mongolian law in this regard).

North American and Mongolian paleontologists involved in the case have indicated that all complete or clearly identifiable fossils from T. bataar have come from within Mongolia. However, fragmentary remains possibly belonging to this species of dinosaur have been found elsewhere, including China and Kazakhstan.

"If we are not talking about a complete dinosaur, and they do acknowledge parts of the dinosaur have been found in other countries, then guess what, they have a problem," Tompa told LiveScience.

He and McCullough aren't just attacking the Mongolian origin of the fossils; they also hope to undercut the legal basis for the U.S. Attorney's case.

Although Mongolian officials say their law was violated, the effort to seize the dinosaur must be based on U.S. law. The U.S. Attorney's office says it has the right to take the dinosaur because Prokopi falsely described the fossils when he imported them from England. [Album: A Tarbosaurus Travels from Auction to Court Room]

Tompa and McCullough are saying the fossils came in to the United States in multiple shipments, not as one, as the U.S. Attorney's office maintains.

On its surface, the description of the dinosaur as a composite appears to conflict with how the dinosaur was marketed before it went up for auction on May 20.

In its catalog description, the auction house that offered the dinosaur for sale, Heritage Auctions, billed it as "an incredible, complete specimen. ? The body is 75 percent complete and the skull 80 percent."

The description does not refer to the fossil skeleton as a composite or as coming from a single animal. As it turns out, this lack of specificity is telling.

"The T. bataar's completeness, with a body of 75 percent real bone, is very rare for a dinosaur. In even rarer cases where a dinosaur fossil was demonstrably derived from one animal, auction houses will typically proclaim that fact in their catalog descriptions," said David Herskowitz, who directed the auction for Heritage Auctions, in a statement. He noted that nearly all skeletons sold are composites.

Heritage spokesman Noah Fleisher later clarified: "If we are comfortable that we can DEMONSTRATE that all the fossils come from a single animal, we will note it as such. Therefore, if we don't note it as such, it either means (1) the specimen is a composite, or (2) we aren't confident enough that we can prove it isn't a composite. Also, every bidder that Mr. Herskowitz spoke to before the sale, including the winning bidder, was fully aware that the T. bataar was a composite."

At the May 20 auction, the dinosaur was sold, pending the outcome of the Mongolian's legal challenge, for $1.05 million to an anonymous bidder.

After the tentative sale, North American and Mongolian paleontologists examined the fossils and determined that, yes, indeed, they did belong to the species in question, T. bataar, solidifying the Mongolian claim. The paleontologists' reports, however, do not address the possibility that more than one individual dinosaur was represented.

"I did not see any indication that the T. bataar skeleton came from different individuals, although clearly some elements were casts, not actual bones," Bolortsetseg Minjin, one of the Mongolian paleontologists to inspect the fossils, told LiveScience.

Mark Norell, a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History who contributed to the investigation but who did not have the chance to examine the dinosaur up close, said he could not offer an opinion as to whether or not the dinosaur was a composite.

"It is irrelevant," Norell said. "Whether it was one animal or whether it was several, exporting a single bone from Mongolia is against the law."

The assistant U.S. Attorney in the case, Martin Bell, maintained that the paleontologists had concluded ?that the fossils belonged to a single dinosaur, and Bell said the government was reluctant to take Prokopi's description at face value, according to Reuters.

The case returns to court in December.?

MP labels Victims of Tichka Accident of Being Poorly Educated ...

Morocco World News

Rabat, September 6, 2012

A Moroccan MP has labeled the victims of the tragic traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday in Tichka of being poorly educated and accused them of overloading the bus.

Bouchra El Maliki, MP from the Party of Progress and Modernity (PAM), made her remark after a Moroccan journalist, Toufik Boubaker, floated, on his Facebook page, the idea of building a memorial of the accident in order to remind all Moroccans of their responsibility to strive for making the Moroccan roads safer.

El Maliki opposes this idea arguing that there is a need to address the real causes of the tragedy.

?There was an overload in the bus, so people who were on this bus en route were poorly educated,? she was quoted by Yabiladi as saying.

The MP seems to be more concerned about the image of the country among tourists than about improving road safety in the country and raising awareness among Moroccans about the critical importance of abiding by the traffic rules.

?This idea cannot be approved by the authorities because it gives a negative image of Morocco,? she said. ?In addition, this memorial in a country where there are over 40% of illiterate, among whom a large part of drivers, will be seen 100% by tourists,? she added.

More than 4000 people die annually on Morocco?s roads, or about 12 a day.

Ex-NBC anchor Brokaw briefly hospitalized at Democratic convention

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) - Tom Brokaw, the Emmy Award winning former "NBC Nightly News" anchor, spent part of Thursday undergoing a battery of tests at a Charlotte, North Carolina, hospital after becoming lightheaded from a sleeping aid, the network and Brokaw said.

Brokaw, 72, now a special correspondent and part of NBC's Democratic National Convention coverage team, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center "out of an abundance of caution" when he felt lightheaded on the set of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" early Thursday, NBC News President Steve Capus said in a statement.

"After medical evaluation and a round of tests, Tom was pronounced in great health and has been discharged," Capus said. "We're immensely grateful to the team at Carolinas Medical Center for their excellent care and professionalism."

Brokaw made light of the episode in a posting to his official Twitter account.

"All is well. Early AM I mistakenly took a half dose of Ambien and made less sense than usual. Made a better comeback than Giants," Brokaw said, referring to Wednesday night's 24-17 loss by the New York Giants to the Dallas Cowboys in the opening game of the National Football League's regular season.

Brokaw served as anchor of NBC Nightly News for more than two decades, stepping down from that post in December 2004. He has remained affiliated with NBC, pursuing enterprise reporting projects as a special correspondent.

Brokaw is also an author of several books, including the best-seller, "The Greatest Generation," his telling of the history of the U.S. generation that grew up in the Great Depression and fought World War Two.

Turkey: Death toll in refugee boat sinking hits 58

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Some 58 people drowned when a fishing boat carrying migrants that smugglers had promised refuge in Europe sank after hitting rocks off the coast of western Turkey, officials said Thursday.

Nine children were among the dead, according to Turkey's Dogan News Agency. Several dozen survivors, mostly from Iraq and Syria, were able to swim through the Aegean waters to shore, only 50 meters (160 feet) away.

Survivors had told authorities that some people were trapped below the deck of the submerged vessel, and divers launched an operation to try to find them. Television footage showed several rescue vessels near the dim outline of the submerged boat, which lay just below the surface of the water. Ambulances waited at the top of a cliff, but there were no indications that anyone else had survived.

The group of migrants had previously made their way to hotels in the city of Izmir, where smugglers agreed to take them to Britain. Authorities arrested two Turkish suspects in the smuggling operation, Turkey's TRT television reported.

TRT earlier quoted Tahsin Kurtbeyoglu, a local administrator, as saying 20 bodies were recovered, but the toll rose through the day as more bodies were pulled from within the boat's confines. Those who survived were on the deck, rather than below with other members of their group. It was not immediately clear when the boat sank, but many such vessels carrying migrants make the journey at night to avoid detection by authorities.

Migrants from Asia and Africa have long sought to reach Europe by passing through Turkey, and their desperate efforts have occasionally ended in disaster. Each year, thousands try to sail to Greek islands from Turkish soil in rickety boats. Turkey is now hosting 80,000 Syrians who have fled the civil war in their country and are staying in camps just across the border, and some countries are concerned that larger numbers of Syrians could try to reach Europe illegally.

Greece said in July that it was quadrupling the number of guards at its border with Turkey and boosting other defenses in part because of worries about a potential influx. Some non-governmental groups believe migrants, deterred by tighter enforcement on the land border, are now turning back to more dangerous sea routes in their effort to start a life elsewhere.
