COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A recent, large-scale study on cat intestinal cancer has provided new insight into a common pet disease and its causes; the findings could ultimately benefit humans.

"We are looking for patterns of cancer development in animals, so we can find common risk factors," said Kim Selting, associate teaching professor of oncology at the MU College of Veterinary Medicine. "I mentored a former resident, Kerry Rissetto, as she examined intestinal tumors in cats on a very large scale, and we believe we can use this information to eventually identify cancer risk factors and treatments for humans."

Using a database, the researchers examined 1,129 cases covering 47 years of intestinal cancer in cats. The researchers found that most feline intestinal cancers were lymphoma, or cancer of the immune system, and most cancers were found in the small intestines. The researchers also determined that the Siamese breed, particularly males seven years old or older, had an increased risk of developing intestinal cancer.

"This is important because there are very few population-based studies that allow us to evaluate cancer and risk factors on such a large scale," Selting said. "Pet owners should be on the lookout for unexplained weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea, because these issues can be associated with intestinal cancer."

Selting says that tracking animal cancer is important because animals share the environment with humans. By noting patterns of cancer development, doctors and veterinarians may become aware of environmental factors that could be causing tumor progression in different species, including humans.

"Animal health care may predict what could be coming for human health care," Selting said. "For example, dogs are really the only species, other than humans, that develop the toughest type of prostate cancers. If a treatment develops that can help with prostate cancer, we can test it on dogs and find results faster because cancer in dogs progresses faster than cancer in humans."

The study "Recent Trends in Feline Intestinal Neoplasia: An Epidemiologic Study of 1,129 Cases in the Veterinary Medical Database from 1964 to 2004," won an award for the best research generated from the Veterinary Medical Database (VMDB). The study was published in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association. In addition to Rissetto, other coauthors include J. Armando Villamil, Jeff Tyler, and Carolyn Henry, all from the University of Missouri.

The VMDB holds abstracts detailing 7 million discharged animal species from a consortium of veterinary teaching hospitals. MU was the second veterinary school to contribute data to the VMDB in the 1960s. While initially funded by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, the VMDB is now a not-for-profit corporation whose goal is to acquire, maintain and research clinical data sent from member teaching hospitals in the U.S. and Canada. Additional information on VMDB may be found at their website: http://www.vmbd.org.

The research reported in the published paper is part of Mizzou Advantage, the five unique areas that set MU apart from other universities. The project contributes to the "One Health/One Medicine: The Convergence of Human and Animal Health," which expands on MU's pioneering work in the convergence of human and animal health and connects it with research and instruction in health care delivery, health policy, medical ethics, health care business models and the culture of healthy living.

Hard work, persistence paying off for Aquabelles ? Green Valley ...

While temperatures continue to sizzle in Southern Arizona, theGreen Valley Aquabelles, Green Valley Recreation?s synchronizedswimmers group, has been making waves in the pool in preparationfor their upcoming annual show.

?Love is in the Air? is this year?s theme and the swimmerscouldn?t be more excited.

?It was a joint meeting of the minds to choose the theme,? saidlongtime Aquabelle member Sandy Lichtenberger. ?It?s a great themethat takes the audience to other places to find love around theworld ? like Paris, for example.?

Lichtenberger, who will serve as the show?s mistress ofceremonies, says the Aquabelles have been working ?extra hard? thissummer. Rehearsals started months ago in preparation for theSeptember water show at the East Center Pool where the show isstaged.

A total of 13 women will be swimming in this year?s Aquabelleshow and for the first time in the club?s history a non-GVR memberis participating.

The Aquabelles requested permission from GVR to use a non-memberand were granted approval so Janice Agner from Quail Creek Resortis swimming this year. other GVR clubs have had to recruit outside, especially performance groups such as the Valley Players who useoutside actors when they can not fill dramatic roles from itsmembership.

??We have had members with surgeries who can no longer swim,?Lichtenberger said. ?The big reason also comes down to commitment.Practice several times a week is sometimes too much for somepeople. but those of us who do it, love it.?

A long history

Come rain or shine the Aquabelles have taken to the waterputting on a show and wowing onlookers for 46 years.

The Aquabelles started out in the ?60s as a ?learn to swim?recreational swim group that included men. after a summer of poolpractice where they perfected their swim routines, the group wouldpresent a free swim exhibition for friends and family. the women inAquabelles love to entertain Green Valley and the swim classes ranwith the idea. the men soon left the water and supported them fromthe deck.

Synchronized swimming, also known as pattern swimming or waterballet, was recognized as an Olympic sport in 1984. it mixesswimming with ballet and gymnastics, and includes diving, stunts, lifts and plenty of endurance.

The Aquabelles wear costumes and decorative bathing suits, adding a little ?glamor and glitz.? Each costume is selected toenhance the musical number accompanying the swim show routine.Aquabelle audiences are treated to not only stunning and colorfulbasic costumes, but also embellished ensembles with sequins, feathers, beads, bows and lace.

Music is what makes the routine and this year?s show featureslove songs like ?Love will keep Us Together,? recorded in 1975 byCaptain and Tenille; ?I love You a Bushel and a Peck,? from themusical ?Guys and Dolls,? and ?I Just called to Say I love You,?made famous by Stevie wonder. Underwater speakers allow theswimmers to hear the music below the surface.

There?s more

Adding to this year?s entertainment is a special on deck dancingtreat by the Desert Stars with dancers Kathy Watson, Jill Drydenand Suzette Goebel stepping out to ?It?s all in the Jeans.?

The Aqauabelles don?t want to give away any surprises, but thereis also a number in the lineup by the AquaBeaus. You have to cometo the show to see it.

?Love is in the Air? highlights the talents of several directorsand production team members. the show?s director is Karen Kolze, assisted by Mary Zellner. Swim coach is Yvonne Gallagher, 83, theAquabelle?s longest serving member who joined the team back in 1986and has recruited many new swimmers throughout the years. JanetDenton, another longtime member, was there to lend a hand.

Newcomer Cindy Salmon is in charge of the music and Mark Haskoelends his skills as the groups? photographer and videographer. JaneBrunckhorst was responsible for the script.

Stars of the show, including some who are directing numbers andnot swimming, are: Sandy Lichtenberger, Jan Haskoe, Betsy Lloyd,Gail Haight, Beryl Sumner, Janice Agner, Judy Case, JoyceFinkelstein, Jan McGuire, Judi Quinn, Karen Siefert, Karen Kolze,Carol Wilhelms, Donna Cornejo, Bonnie Fleming, Mary Zellner, YvonneGallagher and Sandy Parker.

Aquabelles special guests include Linda Freeman and Les Walterswho will perform a couple numbers including ?Rubber Ducky.?

Thanks as well to John Agner, Jack Bobst, David Coffman, JackCerasualo, Joe Smith and Ralph Stachowiak.

Guard describes scene in room where Jackson found (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The last days of Michael Jackson's life were filled with the adulation of fans, a rehearsal performance onlookers described as amazing and intense preparations for his big comeback in London.

In good spirits, Jackson chatted with well-wishers outside his home and at the Staples Center where he practiced songs and dance routines before he returned home. Then, things took a tragic turn, according to Michael Amir Williams, who testified Wednesday in the trial of the doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter in the superstar's death.

Williams, who had gone with him to the rehearsal and had dropped Jackson at home, said he got a frantic call the next day from Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray. "He said, `Get here right away. Mr. Jackson had a bad reaction.' He said, `Get someone up here right away,'" Williams told the jury.

A security guard, Faheem Muhammad, testified that he arrived at Jackson's bedroom to find Murray sweating and nervous, leaning over Jackson and trying to revive him. He said that Jackson's two older children, Paris and Prince, were in shock, and that Paris fell to the ground, curled up and weeping.

Moments later, Muhammad said, he heard Murray ask if anyone knew CPR.

The testimony on the second day of the trial helped shed light on what Murray did and didn't do after he found Jackson unconscious in June 2009. Murray, 58, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison and would have to relinquish his medical license.

On June 24, 2009, the day before Jackson's death, Murray was in negotiations to join Jackson on his tour as his personal physician, testified lawyer Kathy Jorrie of concert giant AEG Live. She said she was gathering information for an insurance company to make sure Jackson was in good health and could be insured.

"Dr. Murray told me repeatedly that Michael Jackson was perfectly healthy, in excellent condition. Don't worry about it. He's great," she recalled.

Jorrie said Murray had added to his contract a provision for a CPR machine when they got to London for the highly touted show that would include 50 concerts over nine months. "He needed to be sure if something went wrong he would have such a machine available," she said. "He also told me it was customary."

Murray signed the contract, which would give him $150,000 a month, and faxed it to her that night, she said. Jackson, however, would never get to sign it.

In the late afternoon of June 24, Williams, Jackson's personal assistant, said he arranged for a car and accompanied his boss to Staples Center for a key rehearsal. He said Jackson was in good spirits and had the car stop at the gate so he could roll down the window and chat with fans who were always camped there.

"He would make sure we stopped, stick out his hand, anything to show his fans he loved them," he said.

Williams managed to watch Jackson on stage. "I was an employee but I was a fan first," he said. "I would try to sneak in to watch him. I was working constantly, but I was able to see him perform a little."

How was his performance, asked Deputy District Attorney David Walgren.

"Personally, I thought it was amazing," Williams said. "I thought it was the best thing in the world. He had told me he didn't go 100 per cent for the rehearsal. It was about 40 per cent. But I thought it was great."

They returned to Jackson's rented Holmby Hills mansion after that, stopping at the gate again. "He was in good spirits," Williams said. "He wanted to stop and say, `Hi.' He even had some conversation with the fans."

Outside the house, parked in its usual spot, was Murray's car.

Williams brought in gifts that had been given to Jackson and said good night. Williams checked out with the security staff and went home. The next day at 12:13 p.m. his cell phone rang. There was a message from Murray.

"Were you asked to call 911?" Walgren asked.

"No sir," Williams said.

He remembered reaching Jackson security guard Alberto Alvarez. "I said, `I don't know what's going on but you have to get in the house' ... I said, `Run. Hurry.'"

Williams said he rushed from his downtown home and arrived just as Jackson's body was being loaded into an ambulance. He helped to gather Jackson's three children and put them in a car to follow the ambulance.

"What was Dr. Murray's appearance?" Walgren asked.

"Frantic," he said. "I knew it was serious."

Williams said he was standing outside the emergency room area when Dr. Murray and a group of doctors emerged. "He walked out and closed the curtains," he said softly. "He said, `He passed.'"

At one point, Walgren had Williams identify a photograph of Jackson's children. The famous photo was taken at a memorial service shortly after Jackson's death was projected on a large courtroom screen.

On cross-examination, defense attorney Ed Chernoff questioned Williams about Murray's actions at the hospital. He said Murray asked to be taken back to Jackson's home to collect some cream he believed Jackson would not want the public to know about. It was later found to be skin whitening cream that is used in the treatment of vitiligo, a skin condition that the singer had.

Williams said he felt police would not want anyone returning to the home and he did not take Murray there. He then said the doctor said he was hungry and asked for food.

Chernoff suggested that Williams should have known from Murray's call that there was an emergency.

Williams disagreed.

"When I hear someone had a bad reaction, I don't think anything fatal," he said. "He didn't tell me to call 911."

Under questioning from Chernoff, Muhammad revealed that Jackson had asked Williams to contact a nurse four days before his death because he was experiencing "weird symptoms."

"One of his hands was hot and his feet were cold," Muhammad said. He told Chernoff that he did not reveal that he had contacted the nurse, Cherilyn Lee, during interviews with police. He said he wasn't asked about it and didn't think it was relevant.

Chernoff has been questioning witnesses about Jackson's interactions with other physicians, including dermatologist Arnold Klein. Muhammad said at times, Jackson visited Klein's office almost daily. A judge has blocked Klein from testifying in the case.

Best Way To Ride A Skateboard |

Best Way To Ride A Skateboard

Article by Arisean Miller

Skateboarding has quickly become one of the fastest growing sports in recent years. Due to the creation and popularity of the X Games and the prevalence of a whole range of other extreme sports, skateboarding has become a sought after activity for people to learn. Whether as a hobby at home or as a possible future career as a pro boarder, many want to learn how to ride a skateboard. It?s not always as simple as it looks, but with enough practice and these tips, anyone should be able to pick up the basics fairly quickly.

1) Like we said, learning to skateboard isn?t the easiest hobby to pick up, so make sure there is enough time in your schedule to devote to getting the basics down. The best way to figure out if it is something worth your time and energy is to visit a local skate park. Spend a day watching other boarders, and if you feel comfortable enough talk to some and decide if it is something you?re truly interested in pursuing.

2) Once you?ve decided it?s something you?d like to learn, you?ll then need equipment. Visit any sporting goods store or skateboarding shop and have a salesperson help you. Then can show you which particular boards are best for beginnings as well as point you in the direction of all the necessary safety gear. Before you make a purchase, at least stand on the board you are considering buying. Make sure it is a comfortable fit.

3) When you get the board home or wherever you?ll be practicing, spend some time just balancing yourself on it. Get used to being on the board without falling off. Use your back foot to give yourself a slight push and as you roll forward return your footing to the center of the board.

4) Next, practice pushing yourself a few times to return to a centered starting position. Increase the force of the push as you grow more comfortable. Simply place your back foot onto the ground to stop your forward momentum.

5) Make sure to have both of your legs bent slightly at the knees while you are rolling. This will ensure a more centered and balanced stance. If you need extra help maintaining your balance, hold your hands out to your sides.

It may be slow going at first but as they say, ?Practice makes perfect?. Don?t give up and continue to work on the basics. The best approach is to have someone who is already an accomplished skateboarder to help guide you through the basics. Make sure to always wear the proper safety equipment and don?t get ahead of yourself and try dangerous tricks before you?re ready. Soon enough you?ll have what it takes.

Rosh Hashanah boasts many symbolic food traditions | More Gossip ...

doc4e82391273dcd049577839 Rosh Hashanah boasts many symbolic food traditions

Matthew Mead/Associated Press

Today?s recipe for honey-thyme glazed chickens with cider gravy and baby spinach salad has a sweet autumnal flavor.

The celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins Wednesday night at sun down and will be celebrated until sundown on Friday. Symbolic foods are eaten throughout the two-day holiday, which begins the ?Days of Awe,? characterized by the blowing of the ram?s horn, called a shofar, and the eating of symbolic foods.?we wish each other a sweet year, so apples and honey are a very common thread throughout the holiday,? explained chef Ruth Levine.she has 12 friends and family members coming for Wednesday night?s dinner at her home in Pepper Pike. ?It?s a holiday when children come home and family members gather with friends.?Levine?s restaurant, Bistro 185 at 991 E. 185th St. at the Cleveland-Euclid border, will be open during Rosh Hashanah but will not be serving food typical of the holiday.?It?s more of a family holiday,? Levine said. ?People don?t go out to a restaurant for Rosh Hashanah.?Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve and the birthday of mankind.?many people avoid eating horseradish, vinegar or anything sour or tart because the focus is on having a sweet year,? Levine said.Challah bread, another tradition, is made in a round shape to symbolize a round and full year ahead as well as the circle of life. Pieces of the bread are torn from the loaf and dipped in honey.Matzoh meal, the crumbs of unleavened bread, is a typical ingredient in many so-called Jewish foods. It?s especially popular made into dumplings to be served in chicken soup.Carrying the symbolism further, it is also customary to avoid eating nuts during Rosh Hashanah, because the numerical value of the Hebrew word for ?nuts? is the same as the word for ?sin.?many Jewish cooks serve chicken for their Rosh Hashanah meal, because chicken, like challah bread, is round.?I use the Empire kosher chicken both at home and at the restaurant,? Levine said. ?They?re all-natural kosher chickens that have been brined according to the dietary rules of the Jewish religion. You can get them at Heinen?s and lots of other places, and they?re delicious.?For both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Levine will attend services at Park Synagogue in Cleveland Heights. even Jews who don?t often go to services will be seen in Temple during the High Holy Days.??To me the most inspiring part of synagogue is the blowing of the shofar ? the only time of year you hear it,? she said. ?The doors of heaven are opened to you.?The sounding of the shofar, which is heard 100 times during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur a week later, represents the trumpet blast of a King?s coronation.?Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement and the most holy day of the year,? Levine explained. It begins at sundown on Oct. 7 and continues until after sundown the following day.?There?s a meal in the afternoon because we fast during Yom Kippur and break the fast after sundown the next day. I like to be at synagogue before sun down, because that?s when the service begins.?those observing Yom Kippur are left with a clean slate for the year ahead. Dairy foods are typically those used to break the Yom Kippur fast, Levine said.HONEY-THYME GLAZED CHICKENS WITH CIDER GRAVYServes 102 whole chickens (4 to 5 pounds each), giblets discarded2 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oilKosher salt, to tasteGround black pepper, to taste4 teaspoons dried thyme, divided1 large yellow onion, quartered3/4 cup dry white wine3/4 cup water4 Tablespoons butter or margarine1/2 cup honey1 1/2 cups apple cider, divided2 Tablespoons lemon juice, divided2 cups chicken broth3 Tablespoons all-purpose flourHeat the oven to 425 degrees and set oven rack in the middle of oven. Deborah Finding: Tori Amos Talks ?Shattering? Relationships

Tori Amos has been a trailblazer for her entire career, developing her own composing style from her earliest years, and tackling difficult subjects such as sexual violence and miscarriages on her records. This week sees Amos try yet another new direction with the release of her twelfth studio album. Night of Hunters is a 21st century song cycle, based on classical themes, which explores the breakdown of a relationship through the eyes of several characters. Deborah Finding caught up with her in a London hotel to talk marriage, motherhood and muses.

***
?That is not my blood on the bedroom floor. That is not the glass that I threw before.? (?Shattering Sea?)

Deborah Finding: I thought your new record would have particular resonance for Huffington Post Divorce readers, starting as it does with a separation and then looking at that from the inside from many angles. But is it only after that initial shattering ? as you call it ? of the relationship, that both characters are able to look at who they really are, both to themselves and to the other person?

Tori Amos: Well, this story starts with a shattering. And, because of it, they both responded in different ways. He chose to walk out, and she was left with glass everywhere and having to take the next step. In the story, the next step is that through the night, there?s a transformation. But for the transformation to happen, there needs to be an honest look at her part in things: at the choices she made for herself and the choices she didn?t make for herself ? in her life and in her career. She chose to turn her back on her own force ? which is, of course, metaphorical for anything ? and to allow herself to be pulled into his world, into his life and live in the shadow of his light. That didn?t end well for them because there was blame.

?Since time, why do we women give ourselves away? We give ourselves away thinking somehow that will make him want to stay, make him stay?
(?Job?s Coffin?)

DF: That?s been quite a common theme in your work: the idea of allowing another person to steal your power. Do you think relationships only work when the power dynamic is equal, or is it the passing backwards and forwards of a necessarily unequal power?

TA: Well that?s a very fascinating thought ? is it unequal power being passed back and forth, where each one is the strong one for a while, and it?s a baton race, but you?re on the same team? I can see that working, especially if you have differing ways to get up the mountain. Not everybody wants to have the same career. I think what?s difficult is when you have two people that do something very, very similar and they both, say, want the limelight. That?s very tricky. When one doesn?t want the limelight, but is also creative in developing whatever it is they are, then you can have two equal people that aren?t competing against each other. I think when you are in the same field, it?s difficult to leave it outside and not compete. Then when the doors are closed, that pervades everything.

?Every couple has their version of what they call the truth?
(?Cactus Practice?)

DF: Do you think there?s the potential for that element of competition, not just with partners but with other close family too? I know your eleven-year-old daughter Tash sings the character of Annabelle on the record, and has just started stage school. Were there any reservations about her going into the family business?

TA: Well ? I mean, I?m not trying to follow in the steps of Judy and Liza, though I adore Liza, having met her, how fabulous is she? But ? Tash is on a really different path to mine. I was a pianist/composer first, and realised that I needed to perform my own works. Whereas I think she?s a performer ? an actor and singer ? first. I was never interested in acting. And the reality is that Tash doesn?t sound like me at all. She discovered the blues when she was nine ? that?s how she puts it [laughs]. She told me, ?When I discovered the blues at nine, Mummy, then it all came together and I realised what my path was.? She?s done school projects on Billie Holiday and Martin Luther King and she knows that my father marched alongside Dr King and thousands of people in the 60s for civil rights. Billie Holliday is absolutely her mentor, though she?s now opening up to so many ? even contemporary ?people, and she?s been totally inspired lately by Sam Cooke?s ?A Change Is Gonna Come.? So when you ask me this question, although yes, she?s getting training, she?s at the Sylvia Young Performing Arts School, she pushed us to do it. I tried to talk her into maybe being a veterinarian [laughs]. And she looked at me and said, ?Well, you know, you followed what you wanted to do?. And I had to say, ?Yes, that?s true.?

?Keeping watch over children?s dreams, the ancient Seven Sisters above?
(?Night of Hunters?)

DF: Just thinking about Tash having grown up with, and around, your music ? is it difficult for her to hear you sing about a relationship being shattered? Does it make her worry about things between you and her dad? [Amos has been married to her sound engineer, Mark Hawley, since 1998] Or is she able to draw an easy line between the work you do as Tori Amos, and her experience of you at home?

TA: Well, Tash is all eyes and ears. If you want to know what?s going on in the neighborhood, anywhere in the world, backstage ? ask Tash! And of course, she has an inside view to what is going on in our kitchen. So I think she knew that this wasn?t something that was written about a specific overnight incident, or something that happened over the course of a week. I?ve explained to her that I?ve been collecting stories and experiences for years and years. And she knows that her dad is sort of a muse for me ? I?m putting that in terms of the audience listening ? I don?t know if I would use the word ?muse? to her, because I don?t know what it would mean to her at this age. But most people that follow the arts know that composers or painters are inspired by people, and of course Mark has been one of those for me since I?ve known him. There has to be a privacy level there, so I try not to go into details, but if he thinks I have, he?ll bring those things up!

?He?ll play a Beatles tune. Me, more a Bach fugue.
Is this such a great divide between your world and mine??

(?Your Ghost?)

DF: So you create these characters and put them in the context of a mythology?

TA: Yes, I needed to put it in a story form. And because this is a song cycle for the 21st century, I wanted to explore the feeling that relationships right now can be very disposable. People call their divorce attorney so quickly ? and I?m not saying that divorce isn?t the answer for some people, because it is ? but, I do think there are people that don?t really want to look in the mirror and look soon enough. When we were developing the character of Annabelle, Tash asked me, ?Why do grown ups wait so late to fix their problems?? And a lot of her friends are from divorced households or were going through a divorce at the time of writing this. And what the kids go through, as we know if we?ve been exposed to it, is agony. And so I thought Annabelle should have a bit of that sensibility ? she takes the woman to task and yet in such a way that the woman can listen to her.

?Here on the edge of the moon, running from our future
As I look back, your heart grabs my hand?

(?Edge of the Moon?)

DF: And, of course, you?ve left the resolution of the story open-ended.

TA: Yes. This couple is at a crossroads and whether or not they get back together, it?s really for the listener to decide. I think the importance here is not the end, but the change in the woman. There are some unhealthy parts of herself that need to die. They do. They?re not serving her. But she?s also able to reclaim those vital parts of herself that she had

Commercial Loan Refinancing Refi | Financial Crossing

Commercial loans once acquired are often never reexamined to insure that the best financing value has been negotiated. It is an understatement to say that the business world is dynamic and economic conditions are always evolving. Changes often occur that might indicate the need for the reevaluation of a company or individual position with respect to commercial loans. There are several important reasons that might cause one to consider refinancing of a commercial loan. A few of these reasons are enumerated below;

1. Taking advantage of equity gains that may be realized which could enable the borrower to free up capital for other expenses or ventures. This option is often referred to as ?cashing out? and offers an opportunity to invest the equity that has accrued in a manner that offers a higher return.

2. Interest rates may have declined or another commercial lender is offering a lower rate and it is prudent to take advantage of reduced payments. Reduced loan payments obviously affect cash flow and enhance one?s financial position.

3. Another acquisition may provide an opportunity to combine loans and recognize increased cash flow or take advantage of more favorable terms and conditions. Combining notes may offer the opportunity to take advantage of the equity that has built up in one note to obtain more favorable financing for another. It also offers an opportunity to strengthen a financial statement by closing out a note under favorable conditions.

4. Taking advantage of an opportunity to lengthen the period of the loan and realize an increased cash flow as well as to take advantage of tax concessions.

5. It may be appropriate to pay down some of the note and renegotiate terms and conditions to strengthen one?s financial statement.

These potential reasons have been highlighted for illustrative purposes, but there are other reasons that may cause one to seek commercial loan refinancing. Each individual or company circumstance will dictate differing responses. As with any decision, an evaluation of the advantages and disadvantageous is necessary to insure that the effort is worth the reward. One needs to assess the total impact of the decision with regard to tax implications, the advantages of cashing out equity, the effect on one?s present financial statement, the opportunities for additional investment and the actual savings that may be available.

It is important to note that a detailed analysis may be required to thoroughly assess the impact of potential refinancing. Loan covenants may need to be revised or renegotiated and should be closely examined to insure that the maximum business flexibility is maintained or enhanced. The bottom line that applies to refinancing is to acquire a business advantage that might go unfulfilled without this refinancing action.

In summary, a review of the status of commercial loans may present an opportunity to refinance and realize a gain that may have been previously overlooked.

Installing New Kitchen Cabinets | Amazing Home Improvement

There are few home improvement projects that can be done which will add more value to your property than a kitchen makeover. The price you pay for new kitchen cabinets can be recovered when you go to sell your house. Stock cabinets which are sold at all home improvement stores can be installed by do-it-yourselfers and they will even provide you with a computer design on how to best utilize your space.

Before you purchase cabinets and even think about installation it is important to give a great deal of thought to the new design for your kitchen. Since you are ripping out the old cabinets, you have the ability to start with a clean slate and change all of the things that have bugged you about your current kitchen for years. Do you want more counter space or storage? Is the sink too far from the refrigerator or do you want to hang the microwave over the stove? These are all things that can easily be incorporated into your design.

Once you have figured out where the new cabinets are going to be placed, you can begin to prepare for installation. After the room is gutted, repair any damage to the walls and paint the area that will be visible behind the cabinets. It is much easier to paint before the cabinets are put up and then, if necessary, you can go back and do any touch up work that may be required. With a pencil, draw in where the cabinets are to be installed to serve as a guide for securing them in place. You also want to mark where the studs are in the wall so you know where to place the screws to hold the cabinets in place.

It is best to start by installing the wall cabinets first. Since they are being placed above the base cabinets you will have more room to maneuver. You will need a level for installation, a power screwdriver, dry wall screws, a hammer, shims and a plumb line. Start by using the plumb line to mark a line across the bottom of the wall where the bottom of the wall cabinet will be placed. Next, you want to make a T-brace out of two by fours which you will use to hold the cabinets in place while you are securing them to the wall.

Start installing the upper cabinets in the corner and work your way towards the middle of the room. Each wall cabinet should be secured to the studs in the wall with two screws on top and two on the bottom of the cabinet. Check each cabinet to insure that it is level from side to side and from front to back. If it is not level use shims to balance it out. In addition to securing the cabinets to the wall, each wall cabinet should be screwed into each other. If necessary, use a clamp to hold the cabinets together until the screws can be installed. After finishing on top, work on the bottom cabinets. Once again, it is extremely important to make sure that they are level before securing them to the studs in the wall.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms ? Benefits of Early Diagnosis ...

Cancer of the prostate is typically a slow progressing cancer and symptoms often do not arise for many years. If the cancer is caught at an early stage, there might be no noticeable symptoms. Some men, however, will experience symptoms that could indicate the presence of prostate cancer. These might include:

• A need for frequent urination, particularly at night
• Difficulty starting urination
• Weak or interrupted urine flow
• Pain or a burning sensation during urination
• Difficulty in obtaining an erection
• Pain during ejaculation
• Blood in the urine or in semen
• Recurring pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs

Sometimes the first symptoms will be lower back, hip or pelvic pain caused by cancer which has already spread.

It is important to be aware that the symptoms of both benign enlargement of the prostate gland (i.e. non-cancerous) and malignant tumours (cancer) are similar and might include any of the following symptoms:

• Difficulty starting urination
• Frequent urination, particularly at night
• Pain during urination
• Blood in the urine

Also, men over 50 years of age often have an enlarged prostate gland due to the non-cancerous condition of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or hypertrophy.

Therefore if you notice any of the above symptoms it is important that you see your doctor and have them investigated. But note that most enlargements of the prostate are not due to cancer and can regularly be dealt with quite effectively.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate cancer can often be discovered at an early stage by testing the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. Prostate cancer can also be detected early by your doctor performing a digital rectal examination (DRE). Since the prostate gland is situated close to the rectum, a doctor can physically detect if there are any cancerous signs in your prostate.

Unfortunately the PSA and DRE tests are not totally accurate and conclusive. This can lead to anxiety and confusion, or even to a false sense of security. So important things to consider are your age, your general health and your lifestyle. If you are young and develop prostate cancer, if not caught early enough, it could shorten your life. If however you are older or in poor health, then prostate cancer might never become a serious problem due to its slow-growing nature.

The American Cancer Society recommends that men commence having the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal examination (DRE) annually from the age of 50. Those at higher risk, such as African Americans and those with close relatives who developed prostate cancer at an early age are recommended to commence testing at 45.

The prognosis for prostate cancer sufferers has improved dramatically in recent years. In the past twenty years the overall survival rate for all stages of prostate cancer has increased from 67% to 97%. Thus more men are living significantly longer after diagnosis. In all likelihood this is due to early detection programs, increased public awareness, particularly of prostate cancer symptoms, and the adoption of healthier lifestyles.

3 Of The Most Crucial Internet Marketing Tools For Online Success ...

By L Palmer

Like in any job or business you have certain tools, strategies and systems that make your working process more effective, efficient and productive. Whether it?s a computer system, an up-to-date phone system, spreadsheets, or a filing system that keep things organised I?m sure you?ll agree that these tools are crucial. When it comes to Internet Marketing there?s a plethora of tools to use that will enhance your internet marketing strategy and help you run your business like a true professional and produce better results.

Unlike the vast majority of other business models you can get access to a lot of Internet marketing tools at little or no cost but when it comes to taking your business to the next level you will need to invest some cash to get the best tools that are available. As an online marketing professional, here are some of the best Internet marketing tools available for someone who wants to run an online business properly.

1. Keyword Research

The leader in the keyword research tools market right now is Market Samurai and that?s really because it does so much more than just basic keyword research. Market Samurai also helps you research domains for your business, track how well you?re ranking for specific keywords and has an extremely powerful SEO competition research module included too. All in all it?s a very complete solution that will save you having to spend your cash on several different tools.

2. Autoresponders

You may have heard people say ?the money is in the list? and this is basically referring to the fact that building a mailing list from day one with your online business is one of the most valuable things you can do.

To automate this process you?ll need a service called an autoresponder and the single best one of those available right now is Aweber. Getting into the specifics of how an autoresponder works goes beyond the scope of this article but if you want to build a long-term online presence then you?ll need an autoresponder.

3. Content Management System (CMS)

And of course you?re going to need some place to upload your content to when you?ve finished choosing your domain name, done your keyword research and are now ready to build your list and the best content management system I can recommend (that suits every knowledge and ability level) is the WordPress blogging platform. And even better is that this software is free, is extremely easy-to-use, has zillions of add-ons (called plugins) to provide even more features and it comes with a quick install feature (called Fantastico) with 99.9% of the hosting accounts you sign up for these days.

Usually when people are on the subject of Internet marketing (IM) tools they tend to start thinking about what the best Internet marketing strategies are. There?s an awful lot of them to choose from folks but if there?s one that?s more valuable than others it?s the concept of having a business model that you can replicate easily, operate from any location and that has scalability.

It should be easy to replicate so you can eventually hire somebody to do that work for you. It should be portable because that?s why you got into IM in the first place. And it needs to be scalable so you can grow each online business you build over time. You can look at that as more of a philosophy than a strategy if you wish but if you look at the big hitters in Internet marketing this is how they operate ? because it works.

Now you should have a much clearer picture of exactly what you need to run your online business like a professional?

Now you have your internet marketing tools sorted, the next step is to have a profitable online business to use them in.

Georgia executes Troy Davis after his last pleas fail

Troy Davis was put to death by lethal injection late Wednesday for the 1989 murder of an off-duty police officer, maintaining his innocence until the end after convincing thousands of it, but not the justice system.

Davis was declared dead at 11:08 p.m. EDT, a prison official said.

His execution, which began at 10:53 p.m., came after a three-hour hold while the Supreme Court considered a late request for a stay. In the end the court refused to stop the execution, despite calls for clemency from former President Jimmy Carter, Pope Benedict XVI and others.

Davis' attorneys say seven of nine key witnesses against him recanted all or parts of their testimony, but state and federal judges repeatedly ruled against granting him a new trial.

"It's not my fault; I did not have a gun," he said while strapped to a gurney, according to witness Rhonda Cook of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I did not personally kill your son, father, brother," he said, Cook reported.

He asked his family and supporters to "dig deeper" into the case after his death "so you can find the real truth."

"For those about to take my life," he told prison officials, "may God have mercy on your souls. May God bless your souls."

MacPhail's family attending the execution never turned their heads or wavered, said witness John Lewis of WSB radio. They included the officer's son, Mark MacPhail Jr., and brother, William MacPhail.

"They just stared at the glass, watching as the execution happened," he said.

MacPhail's widow, Joan MacPhail-Harris, said in a telephone interview from Jackson there was "nothing to rejoice," but that it was "a time for healing for all families."

"I will grieve for the Davis family because now they're going to understand our pain and our hurt," she said. "My prayers go out to them. I have been praying to them all these years. And I pray there will be some peace along the way for them."

"I'm kind of numb. I can't believe that it's really happened," MacPhail's mother, Anneliese MacPhail, said in a telephone interview from her home in Columbus, Ga. "All the feelings of relief and peace I've been waiting for all these years, they will come later. I certainly do want some peace."

Of Davis' claims of innocence, she said, "He's been telling himself that for 22 years. You know how it is, he can talk himself into anything."

Members of Davis' family who witnessed the execution left without talking to reporters.

A crowd of 700 Davis supporters who had gathered outside the prison in the afternoon dwindled to about 50 as the minutes, then hours, passed.

When word of the delay came, they cheered and sang "We Shall Overcome."

After the execution, the group started to clap and quietly sing while police maintained a large presence with riot gear including tear gas, tasers, and hand restraints, NBC News reported.

About 10 counterdemonstrators also were outside the prison, showing support for the death penalty and MacPhail's family.

The Supreme Court had received the request for a stay less than an hour before the 7 p.m. ET time set for the execution, then delivered a one-sentence rejection more than three hours after the time had passed.

State officials had waited for the response.

"We are in a delay, waiting for a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court," Peggy Chapman of the Georgia Department of Corrections told NBC News earlier.

The court had no deadline for a decision, and the state was under no obligation to wait, NBC News reported.

The U.S. Supreme Court's action came after Georgia's Supreme Court had rejected a last appeal by Davis? lawyers. Earlier, a Butts County Superior Court judge also declined to stop the execution.

In their U.S. Supreme Court filing, Davis' attorneys said "substantial constitutional errors" were made when the lower courts denied his claims that "newly available evidence reveals that false, misleading and materially inaccurate information was presented at his capital trial in 1989, rendering the convictions and death sentence fundamentally unreliable," NBC News reported.

The lawyers said they've been struggling to get these claims heard in the lower courts "after having a grueling clemency process."

Davis and his supporters have maintained his innocence. Prosecutors have stood by the case.

Davis' supporters held vigils outside Georgia's death row and as far away as London and Paris. They declared "I am Troy Davis" on signs, T-shirts and the Internet. They also tried increasingly frenzied measures, urging prison workers to stay home and even posting a judge's phone number online, hoping people will press him to put a stop to the lethal injection.

"We're trying everything we can do, everything under the law," said Chester Dunham, a civil rights activist and talk show host protesting in Savannah, where MacPhail, 27, was killed.

Outside the Jackson prison earlier, demonstrators, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, gathered Wednesday afternoon for a prayer rally. As they shouted, "Free Troy Davis!" a man in a red SUV drove by and shouted, "Kill him! Kill him!"

Several dozen people gathered outside the White House to protest the execution. They held signs condemning it as a "lynching" and chanted "Too much doubt" and "What do we want? Justice!"

About 150 people gathered in support of Davis in Paris, many of them carrying signs emblazoned with his face. "Everyone who looks a little bit at the case knows that there is too much doubt to execute him," Nicolas Krameyer of Amnesty International said at the protest.

Davis' execution had been stopped three times since 2007, but on Wednesday the 42-year-old appeared to be out of legal options.

As his last hours ticked away, an upbeat and prayerful Davis turned down an offer for a special last meal as he met with friends, family and supporters. His attorney Stephen Marsh said Davis would have spent part of that time taking a polygraph test if pardons officials had taken his offer seriously.

"He doesn't want to spend three hours away from his family on what could be the last day of his life if it won't make any difference," Marsh said.

Davis' supporters also include a former FBI director, the NAACP, and several conservative figures. Amnesty International says nearly 1 million people have signed a petition on his behalf. The U.S. Supreme Court even gave him an unusual opportunity to prove his innocence in a lower court last year, though the high court itself did not hear the merits of the case.

He was convicted in 1991 of killing MacPhail, who was working as a security guard at the time. MacPhail rushed to the aid of a homeless man who prosecutors said Davis was bashing with a handgun after asking him for a beer. Prosecutors said Davis had a smirk on his face as he shot the officer to death in a Burger King parking lot.

No gun was ever found, but prosecutors say shell casings were linked to an earlier shooting for which Davis was convicted.

Witnesses placed Davis at the crime scene and identified him as the shooter, but several of them have recanted their accounts and some jurors have said they've changed their minds about his guilt. Others have claimed a man who was with Davis that night has told people he actually shot the officer.

"Such incredibly flawed eyewitness testimony should never be the basis for an execution," Marsh said. "To execute someone under these circumstances would be unconscionable."

State and federal courts, however, have repeatedly upheld Davis' conviction. A federal judge dismissed the evidence advanced by Davis' lawyers as "largely smoke and mirrors."

The motion filed Wednesday by Davis' attorneys in Superior Court in Butts County disputed testimony from the expert who linked the shell casings to the earlier shooting involving Davis, and challenged testimony from two witnesses.

The NAACP, which helped lead the charge to stop the execution, had considered asking President Barack Obama to intervene.

Obama cannot grant Davis clemency for a state conviction.

Wednesday evening, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Obama would not get involved, NBC News reported.

"Dating back to his time in the Illinois State Senate, President Obama has worked to ensure accuracy and fairness in the criminal justice system ? especially in capital punishment cases. However, it is not appropriate for the President of the United States to weigh in on specific cases like this one, which is a state prosecution."

In Savannah, Davis supporters presented petitions urging the state to spare Davis' life, saying they were signed by 240,000 people. They delivered the petitions to District Attorney Larry Chisolm, though he has said he was powerless to intervene.

Earlier Wednesday, six retired corrections officials, including Allen Ault, retired director of the Georgia Department of Corrections and former warden of the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, where he oversaw executions for the state, sent a letter to Georgia corrections officials and Gov. Nathan Deal asking them to urge the pardons board to reconsider its decision.

"We write to you today with the overwhelming concern that an innocent person could be executed in Georgia tonight," the letter said in part.

Davis' best chance may have come last year, in U.S. Supreme Court-ordered hearing. It was the first time in 50 years that justices had considered a request to grant a new trial for a death row inmate.

The high court set a tough standard for Davis to exonerate himself, ruling his attorneys must "clearly establish" Davis' innocence ? a higher bar to meet than prosecutors having to prove guilt. After the hearing judge ruled in prosecutors' favor, the justices didn't take up the case.
