TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) ? More than 400,000 Israelis poured into streets in cities across the country Saturday night, Israeli media estimated, in a show of strength behind a social protest movement that has rocked the country for two months.
The demonstrations in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and elsewhere against Israel's high cost of living, its housing crisis and distorted distribution of wealth marked the high point ? so far ? of a summer-long grass-roots protest movement that has ballooned from a few tents in Tel Aviv to a nationwide phenomenon that has delivered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government its most serious domestic crisis.
Israeli media said the turnout in Tel Aviv was more than 300,000, and more than 100,000 demonstrated in other cities. Israel's police did not give an estimate. Taken together, the numbers put the Saturday demonstrations among the largest in Israel's history, and the other large ones were over political issues like Mideast peacemaking, not social ills.
The protest movement and its slogan of "the people demand social justice" have thrust Israel's economic issues to the top of the country's agenda and brought thousands into the streets each week.
In Tel Aviv, protest leader Itzik Shmuli called the gathering a historic moment.
"The new Israelis have a dream and it is very simple: we want to build our home in Israel," Shmuli shouted. "We will not stop this protest until you, Mr. Prime Minister, give us real solutions."
Saturday marked the eighth week in a row protesters have taken to the streets.
"I've had enough of always working and never advancing. You have to work several jobs just to survive. All the burden is on the middle class," said Sharon Riwkes, a 30-year-old clinical psychology resident in Tel Aviv.
In response to the summer-long protests, Netanyahu has appointed a committee to address the demands. The demonstrators ? a loose coalition of university students, social activists and disenchanted youngsters ? have rejected all the reforms offered by the government and have pledged to continue protesting.
The protests have included representatives of all segments of society, with the exception of ultra-Orthodox Jews. Many Israelis are concerned about the growing influence of an expanding community where most of its men study scripture and live on government handouts.
A brief flare-up between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza deflected attention from the protests, but the large turnout Saturday indicated the focus has returned.
Israel emerged from the global financial crisis relatively unscathed. The economy is enjoying rapid growth, and unemployment is at its lowest in decades at around 5 1/2 percent.
Even so, statistics show the ranks of the working poor have grown dramatically as wealth has increasingly become concentrated among a small group of tycoons.
The middle class has specifically been hit hard, with high taxes and salaries that have not kept pace with rising consumer prices.
In recent months, the country has experienced protests against the high price of gasoline and cottage cheese ? a staple of the Israeli diet ? and seen lengthy strikes by social workers and doctors over low pay and working conditions.
"There is a chance here to change the face of Israel," parliamentary opposition leader Tzipi Livni told Israel's Channel 2 TV.

Politicians and corporations behaving badly: that's one theme that emerges from the latest secret State Department cables released by WikiLeaks.
The new revelations don't measure up to the seriousness of the alleged massacre of civilians by U.S. troops in Iraq that I delved into over the weekend. But they are still very much worth noting.
A cable from 2008 titled "Mayawati: Portrait of a Lady" reports that the chief minister of India's Uttar Pradesh state (the country's most populous) once dispatched an empty private jet to Mumbai to procure her favorite brand of sandals:
Mayawati's full majority victory in May 2007 UP State Assembly elections left her beholden to no one and has allowed her to act on her eccentricities, whims and insecurities. When she needed new sandals, her private jet flew empty to Mumbai to retrieve her preferred brand. According to Lucknow journalists, she employs nine cooks (two to cook, the others to watch over them) and two food tasters.
At a press conference today, Mayawati called the report "wrong, baseless, and disgusting." She also asked that Julian Assange be put "into a mental asylum."
Read the original cable here.
Jumping over to the Middle East and North Africa, two more revelations of interest: First, it appears that U.S. diplomats were skeptical of a deal between Microsoft and the now-deposed dictator of Tunisia, Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.
In a September 2006 cable flagged by ZDNet, an official at the embassy in Tunis expressed reservations about a deal that provided "for Microsoft investment in training, research, and development, but also commits the GOT [Government of Tunisia] to using licensed Microsoft software." The basic concern was that the software giant would be helping Ben Ali's regime oppress Tunisians more effectively.
Wrote the author of the cable:
Microsoft's reticence to fully disclose the details of the agreement further highlights the GOT emphasis on secrecy over transparency. In theory, increasing GOT law enforcement capability through IT training is positive, but given heavy-handed GOT interference in the internet, Post questions whether this will expand GOT capacity to monitor its own citizens. Ultimately, for Microsoft the benefits outweigh the costs.
The company did not comment to ZDNet. I've asked Microsoft for comment and will update this post if I hear back.
Finally, a cable from Iraq flagged by AFP provides a snapshot of the ever-increasing reliance on private military contractors by the United States. The basic concern was that Iraq, which had already banned Blackwater from the country after the notorious 2007 Nisour Square shooting, would also ban all former Blackwater employees. And the U.S. still relied on the same corps of former Blackwater employees who had joined other firms like Triple Canopy and DynCorps.
From a January 4, 2010 cable:
[A government spokesman] also indicated that the GOI [Government of Iraq] might expel former Blackwater employees out of Iraq, potentially complicating security services for the Embassy. ...
[T]here are many former Blackwater employees at other private security companies in Iraq, most notably Triple Canopy and DynCorps providing security services to us.
Another cable written a week later reported that, "The Embassy understands that Triple Canopy currently employs several hundred former Blackwater employees."

Read more: "Quantum minds: Why we think like quarks"
Creating robots with multiple personalities may be one way to make them act more like us.
Despite their reputation as a psychological disorder, we all have multiple personalities. Controlled personality switching helps us juggle our daily roles ? as workers, parents and spouses, for instance. In contrast, robots are usually programmed to respond to situations by following a single set of rules, which makes them inflexible. To trigger a personality switch in robots, quantum logic, with its limitless and apparently random outcomes, could do the trick.
Quantum logic is a new type of robotic control, so roboticists needed a task to test its performance. They took the unusual step of including a science fiction story in the process of designing their quantum programming challenge. A story about a robot bartender provided the model of how to test quantum-driven programs with multiple personalities.
In the story, Jimmy the robot dutifully fills its creator's endless drink orders, even though his customer leaves the glasses untouched. The robot does not think to question the situation until he is taught that he possesses different identities: his bartender persona is obliged to respond to drinks orders, but he can also switch to a less constrained persona to ask why a customer would order the same drink, again and again, without taking a sip.
The story, written by Brian David Johnson of chip manufacturer Intel, is a "science fiction prototype". It starts with current scientific thinking and uses the creative freedom of fiction to explore the implications of technology.
Upon reading the tale, Simon Egerton, a roboticist at the Sunway Campus of the University of Monash in Bandar Sunway, Malaysia, realised that Jimmy's personality change provided an ideal testing ground for quantum logic programs.
"That inspired me to take that scene in the story and feed it back into the science now," Egerton says. His competition, set to begin in October, is designed to find a program that eventually questions the customer's nonsensical drink orders.
Typical computer programs execute a sequence of simple yes-or-no decisions using classical logic. Quantum logic expands the number of possible outcomes and sprinkles a touch of randomness into the mix.
In a trick of quantum mysteriousness, a bit of information ? called a "qubit" in quantum computing ? can occupy several states at once. A qubit running through the personality selection program can hop between robot identities, activating a drink-making bartender, a polite waiter or a child-like, inquisitive persona.
Thus, the same drink order, or input, can result in different personality outputs, such as a question or a sassy refusal to fill the order.
Although each switch happens randomly ? which could seem irrational ? each personality occurs with a known probability. Over time, with successive interactions between the bartender and the customer, a pattern of personalities emerges. The outcome is "not irrationality, but a very structured way of jumping between different contexts", says Diederik Aerts of Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Brussels, Belgium, who was not involved with the work.
Egerton and his colleagues plan to release a set of quantum logic controllers for programmers to incorporate into their own bartender programs for the competition. Anyone can log into a virtual bar, assume the character of the customer and evaluate the robot bartenders on their level of independence.
"I don't know if it's going to work, or what the results will be," Egerton says. Perhaps the quantum controllers will match, or even outperform, personality switching programs using traditional logic, he adds.
Others disagree. "Quantum computing does not solve any problems that classical computing cannot tackle now," says Martin Lukac of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. "It just does the calculations faster."
Egerton says the quantum controllers could raise the question of the existence of robotic free will. However, even free will in humans is not yet fully understood, responds Aerts.
"I personally think that they are onto something, but I think it is much more complex than they imagine," he says.
Still, Aerts finds the competition intriguing. "I think science advances with wild ideas," he says. "And if science advances, many amazing things will be found, much more amazing than science fiction writers can imagine."
Science fiction offers plenty of warnings about humans losing control of wilful robots. Could this experiment be dangerous?
Egerton suggests science fiction could offer the answer to this question, too. Writer Issac Asimov's three laws of robotics ? a robot must not hurt humans, must always be obedient and must protect its own existence ? could rein in a robot's free will, Egerton says. "I think that's one of the many things [Asimov] got right."

Student Loans ? How To Clear Your Student Debts
Article by David Lynes
As many people know life as a student can be financially straining these days, and it is usually necessary for students to take out some form of finance over the course of their education. There are a number of different finance and credit options available for students these days, ranging from student credit cards and student loans to government loans and overdrafts from the bank.
Students can enjoy a range of benefits when it comes to finance. For example, a number of banks offer student overdrafts that are interest free for a set period of time, usually giving the student time to find work following university before having to pay interest. Government loans also enable students to find work before having to make repayments, with a minimum income level in place before repayments have to be made.
No matter what type of finance you take out as a student it is only natural that you will want to repay the money that you borrow as early on as possible, as nobody wants to be lumbered with huge amounts of debt after leaving university and starting out in life. This is why it is important to start thinking about how to repay your student debts as soon as possible.
In cases where you have debt that does not incur much or any interest, such as student overdrafts with some banks and government student loans, you can work towards using your advanced education to get a more lucrative and well paid job, which will then enable you to put as much money as possible towards your low or no interest student debts and get them cleared as quickly as possible.
However, you may also find that by the time you graduate you have a range of higher interest student debts such as credit cards and student loans from banks. These are the ones that you should primarily concentrate on so that you can avoid paying too much interest on your borrowing. It might even be a good idea to consider consolidating your debts once you have graduated and found a suitable job, as this can cut the amount you have to repay each month as well as reducing the number of repayments that you have to deal with.
You may find a number of companies offering drastic action in order to get rid of student debt, such as IVAs. However, you should bear in mind that this type of action can have a profound negative effect on your credit rating, and if you are a young person having just left university you will have to suffer the effect of this damaged credit for many years to come.
The most popular way of clearing student debts is a consolidation loan to help manage your finances carefully.

Hi, I have been struggling with women who have a jealous reaction toward me. I figured that no matter what I do I am not able to make the women happy. I am a christian woman and I think that we are not responsible for other people?s feelings or reactions, only our own. It is also a matter of spiritual and emotional maturity. Mature people are more loving and more patient. It is the Holy Spirit?s fruit.
