Bryant Jennings Signs New Contract With Peltz Boxing

Philadelphia, PA?Undefeated heavyweight Bryant ?By By? Jennings today signed a new three-year agreement with Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc. Jennings and Peltz tore up their old agreement and signed a new one which both believe will take the North Philadelphia heavyweight to the world title by the end of 2013.

The 27-year-old Jennings (left) came out of nowhere in 2012, scoring victories over previously unbeaten lefty Maurice Byarm, of Washington, DC, and the big one in his last fight March 24, a ninth-round stoppage of former World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich, of Scottsdale, AZ.

?Mickey Mantle went from playing shortstop on a Class C baseball team to centerfield for the New York Yankees in 1951,? said promoter J Russell Peltz. ?That?s exactly what happened to Bryant. He went from fighting six- and eight-round fights on non-TV cards to a pair of big wins on the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series. Suddenly, everyone is paying attention to him.

A pro less slightly more than two years, Jennings is 13-0, 6 K0s, and on the verge of the Top 15. He will be back in action Saturday evening, June 16, at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, on the NBC Sports Network Fight Series show headlined by heavyweights Tomasz Adamek, of Zywiec, Poland, and Eddie Chambers, of North Philadelphia.
Ironically, it was Chambers? bad luck that led to Jennings? good luck.

One week before he was scheduled to fight Liakhovich on Jan. 21 at the Asylum Arena in South Philadelphia, Chambers notified promoter Kathy Duva, of Main Events, that he had suffered a training injury and had to withdraw.

?Fred Jenkins (Jennings? manager) heard about it and called me and asked me to throw Bryant?s name into the mix against Liakhovich,? Peltz said. ?I told Kathy and then, a day later, she told me Liakhovich also couldn?t fight due to a training injury. Jolene Mizzone, of Main Events, offered us Byarm and I didn?t know if Fred and Bryant would fight a lefty on short notice but they agreed and they haven?t looked back since.?

After beating Byarm, Jennings finally got the Liakhovich match in Brooklyn, NY, and dominated from start to finish.

?I?m in a hurry and I don?t have time to waste,? said Jennings, who works a full-time job as a mechanic at the Federal Reserve Bank in Philadelphia. ?I want to fight for the world title by the middle of 2013 and I?ll fight anyone Russell and Fred put in front of me. If I can?t be the best, then I don?t want to be a career boxer. I?ve always done well at sports, whether it was football or basketball or track and that?s how I approach boxing. Either be the best or get out.?

Jennings played football and basketball at Ben Franklin High School in Philadelphia, and also participated in the shot put with the track team. He hung around North Philadelphia recreation centers for a few years before trying his hand at boxing and he went 13-4 in the amateurs, twice losing to veteran lefty Lenroy Thompson in the finals of two national tournaments.
?You have to learn to love boxing,? Jennings said. ?It?s like dating a woman; sooner or later you learn to love her. Sometimes it can be love at first sight, but it wasn?t that way for me. I?m learning to love boxing, but I didn?t feel that way at first.?

AFTER THE BELL

Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc., also announced the signing of welterweight prospect Rafael Montalvo, of St. Clair, PA. Montalvo, 21, who lost in his pro debut in 2009 in Florida, returned last year and has scored a pair of impressive knockouts over Vinny O?Brien, of East Hanover, NJ, and DeCarlo Perez, of Atlantic City, NJ. He returns June 1 at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem. Earlier this year, Peltz signed lightweight Osnel Charles, of Atlantic City, NJ. Charles, 27, is 9-2, 1 K0. Charles goes against hard-hitting Chris Finley, of Detroit, MI, in a six-round bout on April 14 at Bally?s Atlantic City. Finley is 4-4, 4 K0s. Cruiserweights Garrett Wilson, of Philadelphia, PA, and Andres Taylor, of Johnstown, PA, headline the April 14 card in a 12-round fight for Wilson?s USBA crown and the vacant NABF belt. Wilson is one of five world-ranked fighters with Peltz Boxing. The others are welterweights Mike Jones and Ronald Cruz, junior middleweight Gabriel Rosado and super bantamweight Teon Kennedy.

Chiropractic methods for your healthy life

When we grow, our muscles will also get old and they get weak subsequently. So we need to check up our muscles and skeletons often. The problems with the skeleton and muscles don?t have any immediate and major breakdown and yet it will reflect on our day to day daily activities. The chiropractors mainly concentrate on primary care, podiatry, dentistry etc.? Palmer is the early chiropractic professional who is the cause for many New York City chiropractor health centres. Most of the chiropractors ask the patients to do some regular exercises and undergo ice therapy and massages.

Though Chiropractic methods are controversial and opposed before few decades, many physicians and hospitals are accepting chiropractic methods these days.? Before the antitrust case in 1987, chiropractic methods were considered unscientific cult. The massages and ice therapy are found to be reducing the low back pain, migraine headaches, neck pain etc. The spinal massage reduces the tension and hence avoids headaches. The treatment also gives pain relief against tennis elbow and upper limbs. If you are affected with joint and shoulder pains, you can undergo chiropractic treatments in your nearby centres and find the benefits by yourself.

Apart from the health benefits, chiropractic methods are also cost effective, when compared to other medical methods. These methods at regular intervals also help you with dizziness, BP, asthma, menstrual cramps, pelvic pain during pregnancy etc. But make sure, your chiropractic centres is following good massage and therapy techniques. A review has found out that there are many under chiropractic centres which don?t treat the patients well.

Is The Fray's National Anthem Among All-Time Worst?

We look back at the most infamous renditions of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'
By James Montgomery

The Fray perform the national anthem before the 2012 NCAA National Championship game

It seems odd that relaxed-khaki rockers the Fray would inspire acrimony of any sort (unless you hate "Grey's Anatomy"), but that's exactly what's happened following their performance of the national anthem at Monday night's NCAA national championship basketball game.

To be honest, we didn't think it was that bad, but critics have been savaging the band for their jangly spin on "The Star-Spangled Banner," calling it everything from "dreadful" to "acoustic, emo and mercifully quick" ( two assessments that could equally have been applied to the actual championship game, now that we think of it).

And while they may not be fair, those criticisms automatically add the Fray to the rather lengthy list of truly terrible national anthem performances. From crotch-grabbing comediennes to winded, warbling sprinters, here's a look at some of the all-time worst. For the record, we don't think the Fray's version belongs anywhere on this list, but, hey, anytime you find yourself included alongside Steven Tyler and R. Kelly, you've got to be doing something right ... right?

Roseanne Barr
A performance so putrid we're still talking about it 20 years after the fact. In a move that was either inspired or completely insane (probably both), the San Diego Padres invited the foul-mouthed comedienne to sing the national anthem before a game, and, well, they got everything they could've expected ... and more. After screeching her way through the song, Barr was showered with boos and showed her gratitude by grabbing her crotch and spitting. Amazingly, this was a huge deal, and she was vilified in the press. Sort of makes you miss the simpler times of H.W. Bush America, doesn't it?

Carl Lewis
Hey, he's an Olympic champion — surely he can sing, right? Wrong. Lewis' gloriously off-key rendition of the anthem was so bad, people were asking him to give his medals back. As the 20th anniversary of his anthem approaches, it's difficult to pick the worst (i.e. greatest) moment: His Crayola-colored suit? The part where he cracks a note and, as the crowd jeers, declares "Uh oh! I'mma make up for it now"? Watching members of the Chicago Bulls trying (and failing) to stifle fits of laughter? Nah, you know what? We're going to go with the New Jersey Nets' 1993 warm-ups. Those things are still hilarious.

R. Kelly
Call it the Massacre at Mandalay Bay. Before a big-ticket Vegas boxing match, Mr. Robert Kelly strode to the center of the ring and delivered a delirious, step-show-ready version of the anthem. Sure, he sings it well (since R. Kelly is amazing), but as a sheer stylistic choice, well, this one was a total bomb. Not surprisingly, despite Kelly's repeated insistences, no one in the audience clapped their hands. Instead, they just booed.

Michael Bolton
Performing the anthem at Fenway Park, before the Red Sox and the Yankees met for a pivotal 2003 American League Championship game, Bolton made two key errors: One, he totally forgot the lyrics and was forced to read them off the palm of his hand (the crowd lustily booed him for the move), and two, he was Michael Bolton. In Boston. Before a Yankees game. Being from Connecticut wasn't enough to save him or this performance.

Christina Aguilera
Poor Xtina. Performing before an audience of millions at Super Bowl XLV, she fumbled pretty much everything: missing notes and screwing up lyrics (we like the part where she goes "the twilight's last reaming"). She was "devastated" by the mistakes, and since she's done the anthem so well — and so often — before, we're willing to forgive this one. Also, we love her on "The Voice."

Steven Tyler
Yowch. Tyler delivered a cringe-worthy version of the anthem before the Patriots/Ravens AFC Championship game in January, and not even his sparkly Pats scarf could save him from getting booed. It was wobbly, shouty and even a tad pitchy, dawg. Good thing he's not responsible for judging a singing competition or anything.

Which do you think is the worst anthem? Let us know in the comments!

Memory declines faster in years closest to death; mental activity best protection

ScienceDaily (Apr. 4, 2012) ? New research finds that a person's memory declines at a faster rate in the two- and-a-half years before death than at any other time after memory problems first begin. A second study shows that keeping mentally fit through board games or reading may be the best way to preserve memory during late life. Both studies are published in the April 4, 2012, online issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

For the study, 174 Catholic priests, nuns and monks without memory problems had their memory tested yearly for six to 15 years before death. After death, scientists examined their brains for hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease called plaques and tangles.

"In our first study, we used the end of life as a reference point for research on memory decline rather than birth or the start of the study," said study author Robert S. Wilson, PhD, of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

The study found that at an average of about two-and-a-half years before death, different memory and thinking abilities tended to decline together at rates that were 8 to 17 times faster than before this terminal period.

Higher levels of plaques and tangles were linked to an earlier onset of this terminal period but not to rate of memory decline during it.

In an accompanying editorial, author Hiroko H. Dodge, PhD, with Oregon Health and Science University in Portland and a member of the American Academy of Neurology, noted, "The findings suggest that the changes in mental abilities during the two to three years before death are not driven directly by processes related to Alzheimer's disease, but instead that the memory and other cognitive decline may involve some biological changes in the brain specific to the end of life. The study by Wilson and his co-authors deepens our understanding of terminal cognitive decline."

The second study, also conducted by Wilson, focused on mental activities and involved 1,076 people with an average age of 80 who were free of dementia. Participants underwent yearly memory exams for about five years. They reported how often they read the newspaper, wrote letters, visited a library and played board games such as chess or checkers. Frequency of these mental activities was rated on a scale of one to five, one meaning once a year or less and five representing every day or almost every day.

The results showed that people's participation in mentally stimulating activities and their mental functioning declined at similar rates over the years. The researchers also found that they could predict participants' level of cognitive functioning by looking at their level of mental activity the year before but that level of cognitive functioning did not predict later mental activity.

"The results suggest a cause and effect relationship: that being mentally active leads to better cognitive health in old age," said Wilson.

The studies were supported by the National Institute on Aging and the Illinois Department of Health.

Richard Clarke, US Security Wonk, Suggests Customs Should Check All International Net Traffic

RichardClarkestoryRichard Clarke was a major feature in US security for a decade, serving as a member of the National Security Council and special adviser for cybersecurity to President George W. Bush. He has written a column for the New York Times that details just how serious the threat of cyber attacks is for this country, something increasingly evident in light of things like the creaking infrastructure of things like NASA and general cluelessness in legislature. But Mr Clark gives the world a lesson in cluelessness with the conclusion of his column, where he suggests that the United States should, under provisions made to regulate the movement of goods to and from this country, inspect international internet traffic. The suggestion is nothing short of idiotic. Believe it or not, the following was written by someone who worked in national security — specializing in cybersecurity, no less — for years and years.
