67 Year Old Fitness Fan Comments on Senior Health and Fitness ...

AI write about many things on this blog, but I don't want people to think that just because I write about it I endorse it. I will usually pretty explicitly say so if I do.

A couple of days ago, I posted a comment about calorie restriction. I think I made it pretty plain in the body of the article that, based on my reading and research, I did not endorse the practice...I was just offering a little info and expressing an opinion. However, knowing people as I do, I know that some will believe that since I discussed it, and perhaps even made some positive comments about aspects of the practice, that I was saying that's what someone should do.

Actually, most health practices which stray pretty far from the mainstream are either not really as effective as claimed or work best in very specific circumstances.

I normally advise that seniors do pretty the basics to live longer, better, and stay healthier: exercise, eat properly, get a good night's sleep, etc.....

Sometimes, I feel that maybe some people might think, "Just some old guy who is afraid to try new techniques".

Maybe so, but most of what I write is either something with some pretty solid science behind it, including many of my own opinions.

Not everything works the same way for everyone, and despite the basics usually being pretty constant, most will have to find a balance that works for them. I often think of the time I very carefully researched a topic, going to several well-respected sources before I wrote an article on a particular aspect of weight loss. I posted the article on a forum run by a friend of mine at the time, a lady who had accepted every other article I had ever posted and who had even praised my work.

A few days after posting the article, I got an email from the woman saying that she had removed the article from her forum because her husband had done the exact opposite and lost weight. In her mind, that made me, and by extension, several major research facilities, wrong.

Well, I can be wrong. I'm not perfect. However, that happened several years ago. Research on the topic has moved on, but all significant studies still get the same results that I had used to write my article.

It goes to show how someone who already believes, or wants to believe, something is either not going to be able to accept information to the contrary, or will "understand" it in a way that fits in with their beliefs. I cannot overcome that with the best will, and the most undeniable information in the world.

I was reading an article on "Healthy Aging at the Mayo Clinic website this morning, and I saw this:

"Healthy aging is a hot topic for baby boomers everywhere. Whether you're concerned about weight gain, sex drive or chronic diseases, the key to healthy aging is a healthy lifestyle. Eating a variety of healthy foods, practicing portion control and including physical activity in your daily routine can go a long way toward promoting healthy aging. Better yet, it's never too late to make healthier lifestyle choices.

If an interest in healthy aging leads you to consider anti-aging therapies ? such as restrictive diets, supplements or expensive treatments claiming to postpone or even reverse the aging process ? be cautious. There's no quick fix for healthy aging. Know what you're buying, and know how to spot suspicious schemes. Often, anti-aging therapies don't live up to the claims."

Couldn't have said it better myself...maybe.

Beyond weddings and roses: Moon's US influence

The mass weddings at Madison Square Garden and the roses sold by eager evangelists on street corners may be the most enduring images of Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church in the United States.

But Moon's U.S. empire extended far beyond the movement and the Moonies, as Moon's followers were both affectionately and irreverently known. Moon had holdings in media, real estate, universities and even sushi sales.

A look at Moon and the Unification Church's influence around the U.S.:

___

WEDDINGS

Moon introduced the mass weddings he started in Seoul to the U.S. with a 1982 wedding at New York's Madison Square Garden, drawing over 2,000 people, all dressed alike in suits and satin dresses. In 2009, as he turned 90, the church said Moon married 45,000 people in simultaneous ceremonies worldwide in his first large-scale mass wedding in years. Tens of thousands in the U.S. participated in Moon's "blessing ceremonies," many at the Manhattan Center, an event space owned by the church.

___

MEDIA

Moon founded the Washington Times in 1982 as a conservative voice in the nation's capital. At one time, he owned newspapers in New York, Japan and South America. A church subsidiary purchased the United Press International news service over a decade ago.

Moon underwrote the operations of the Washington Times for years as an alternative to the larger Washington Post. The newspaper cultivated a generation of conservative journalists, but also struggled financially recently as it faced declining circulation along with many other newspapers nationwide.

The Times cut about 40 percent of its staff at one point and eliminated its sports section. As Moon aged and transferred control of his media empire to his children, management shake-ups followed at the Times, which also found itself in court over the religious beliefs of the Moon family. The newspaper's former opinion editor sued in 2009 claiming he was pressured by executives to attend a Unification Church event.

___

REAL ESTATE

Moon's holdings include The New Yorker Hotel, an Art Deco landmark near Penn Station in midtown Manhattan; the Manhattan Center, with event spaces that include The Hammerstein Ballroom. The church owned several estates and buildings in Irvington and Tarrytown, New York, north of the city, including Moon's 17-acre (seven-hectare) estate.

____

UNIVERSITIES

The Unification Church rescued the financially troubled University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, which nearly closed in 1991 because of money problems. The Professors World Peace Academy, which was funded by the church, gave $110 million to the school over a dozen years ending in 2003.

At the time, Moon and the academy envisioned creating a network of universities around the world, with each campus open to students and faculty of the others. In 1995, Moon visited UB for the first time and gave a nearly hour-long speech as he received an honorary degree. Opponents, dubbing the school "Moonie U.," protested outside.

University spokeswoman Leslie Geary said Sunday that school officials were thankful for the church's support.

"The Rev. Moon supported the university during a difficult time," Geary said.

____

SUSHI

Moon has purchased and controlled a number of seafood companies around the world, including True World Foods, a wholesaler that distributes sushi and other seafood to more than 8,000 Japanese restaurants around the U.S. Moon has also claimed holdings of seafood and shipbuilding companies in Alabama and Alaska.

___

TAXES

Moon lived mostly in New York State, but for 13 months was an inmate doing kitchen duty at a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. Moon was convicted in the early 1980s of filing false income tax returns for three years in the '80s, failing to report more than $150,000 in income he deposited in New York accounts. Moon contended that the funds were being held for members of his church. He lost an appeal to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in which he was represented by constitutional law scholar Laurence Tribe.

Angola: Ruling party wins election

(AP) ? Preliminary results show that Angola's ruling party has won 75 percent of the national vote, assuring President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, in power for 33 years, another five years in office.

With 60 percent of the vote counted, the state election commission said the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola , or MPLA, has gained a large majority, but it is a reduced margin from previous elections in 2008.

The largest opposition party, UNITA, won 18 percent of the vote and a newcomer party, CASA-CE, gained four percent. The opposition parties criticized the elections for not being free and fair.

Elias Isaac, an observer for the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa, criticized the process, saying he was surprised the MPLA did not get 90 percent of the vote.

Electricity and gas bills are some of the most pressing and by finding ways of cutting or saving on them, you will enjoy life more and you will be in control of your daily budget which is beneficial in every sense. There are simple steps that you can take to put you in control of the electricity and gas bills which have proved to be a headache for many.

Comparing the prices is one of the things that will help you in managing these bills. This comparison will give you the chance to see what the suppliers out there have to offer and then you can decide which switch will be best for the needs that you have. The comparison has been made easy by websites which will give you a list of the gas and electricity suppliers in your area and the rates that they have. These sites are updated on a regular basis and you can therefore expect to find the most recent rates thus making the switch easy for you.

The other simply way of managing the bills is to check on the tariffs which could be beneficial. For instance, dual tariffs can be beneficial. This simply means that you will be getting your electricity and gas from the same supplier at a rate that is quite reasonable thus giving you the chance to cut on the energy bills making it possible for you to save. This is however not always the case and even when settling for the dual tariff arrangement, you will still need to check on all aspects of the arrangements to ensure that you are indeed benefitting from it.

To get the best prices for your gas or electricity, you will need to keep a close eye on the market. Simple price changes can make all the difference. You however will also need to consider just how long the price change offer will last to avoid instances where you keep switching from one supplier to another. Those suppliers offering a more permanent or long term change in the prices should be the ones to be considered but will still be important to regularly check on the market prices to see whether a switch is necessary. It is the best way to be in control of your bills around the house.
