Campus Rec brings home the title | CisternYard.com

At roughly 9pm at night, when George St seems desolate and quite, the Johnson Center is just gearing up. Many College of Charleston students gather together to formulate teams to participate in their choice sport(s). Campus Recreation Services, also known as Campus Rec, offers a plethora of different sports for people to join in such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, kickball, etc.

Recently the College of Charleston intramural basketball teams competed in the Charleston Cup Basketball Tournament which consisted of numerous top intramural basketball teams from Charleston Southern University, The Citadel, and the College of Charleston. The victors of the basketball tournament were both from the CofC.

The members of the women?s championship team were: Abby Frye, Lauren Arnott, Carly Good, Megan Federline, Jessica Raymond, Sattin Young, Bronwen Phillips, Sonny McFarland. The men?s championship roster consisted of: Dylan Nadeau, Taylor Locklear, Zack Mills, Thai Phi, Wes Spears and Chris White.

The playoffs and the championship games were played in the Brewer Center at Charleston Southern University, but the build up to these championship games all this took place in the Johnson Center, where CofC students were competing with one another during the winter season.

The hustle behind the intramural basketball league is obvious once entering the gym. The vitality to play basketball among friends and new acquaintances is palpable with the squeaking sound of gym shoes tracking the floor and the ring of voices calling to each other during the games. Spectators can even be heard cheering their friends on from the second deck of the gym as they watch the basketball games. With two basketball games in operation at once, it is quite obvious that CofC is nestled in a town of basketball enthusiasts.

During the Charleston Cup Basketball Tournament two CofC men?s teams ended up facing each other in the semi finals. However, with great sportsmanship in the program, there were no signs of hard feelings between the teams after having to compete against each other for the title.

Note these games are not prepared with playbooks and intense practices. Instead they are a gathering of people who like the game and are looking for a place to shoot hoops, be active, and take a reprieve from the school grind. Even members from the teams who played in the championships noted that they just gather with other students to shoot hoops without much prep behind any given game.

Campus Rec continues to be an outlet for anyone with a desire to hit the gym and meet some new faces in the process. With its welcoming atmosphere there is no doubt that Campus Rec will again hold great memories, such as bringing home winners from the Charleston Cup Basketball Tournament, for 2012-2013.

Ashton Kutcher Slammed For 'Brownface' Chip Ad

'The [ad] ... was created to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone," says a Popchips spokesperson.

Ashton Kutcher is used to controversy. The "Two and a Half Men" star drew fire recently after Miranda Lambert thought he was mocking country music at the ACM awards
and last year he took heat for seemingly defending ousted college football coach Joe Paterno in the midst of allegations that one of the late legend's assistants had sexual abused boys.

And now he's in the hot seat again. This time it's because of allegations that a new ad campaign he stars in for the Popchips brand traffics in racial stereotypes. In the ad, Kutcher's skin is tinted brown, he sports a bushy mustache and is wearing traditional Indian garb while playing the role of a Bollywood producer named "Raj."

"I'm raj, I'm a Bollywood producer. I'm looking for the most delicious thing on the planet, like Kardashian hot ... I would give that dog a bone ," Kutcher says in a stereotypical Indian accent in the viral ad, which has since been pulled.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson for the company released a statement hitting back at accusations that the commercial was offensive. "The new popchips worldwide dating video and ad campaign featuring four characters was created to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone," the spokesperson said. "At popchips we embrace all types of shapes, flavors and colors, and appreciate all snackers, no matter their race or ethnicity. We hope people can enjoy this in the spirit it was intended."

The campaign for "World Wide Lovers Dating Service" also has Kutcher playing a British stoner named Nigel, a Southern biker named Swordfish and a swishy Karl Lagerfeld-like fashionista. The rep clarified that the ads were not meant to run on TV, but as a "fun online campaign."

Blogger Anil Dash, one of the most vocal critics of the spot, as well as a Popchips and Kutcher fan, wrote on his blog on Wednesday that he had spoken to Popchips founder Keith Belling, "Who was sincere and contrite as he offered a thoughtful, apologetic response that indicates he understood much of what I was trying to say here. I'm cautiously optimistic to see the company's response, and willing to give them time to do it properly. Maybe we can get a good result."

Kutcher, a notoriously active Twitter user who is in the midst of a divorce
from his wife of six years, Demi Moore, had not responded to the flap at press time.

Dell to upgrade unshipped Alienware orders to Ivy Bridge CPUs for free

Are you among the Alienware buyers who plunked down cold, hard cash for a new M14X, M17X, or M18X preceding the launch of Ivy Bridge, but can't stomach the thought of being stuck with Intel's second gen CPUs? Good news, gaming friends, because if your laptop was ordered, but hasn't yet shipped, Dell's doing you a solid by upgrading the chip automatically for you. Best part is, the company will swap in "comparably-priced" new silicon for free, which leaves you to spend your money elsewhere to prep for your forthcoming Diablo III launch party.

Dish Network, AMC dispute could see the network's channels dropped this summer

It wasn't that long ago that Dish Network was proudly offering AMC HD to its customers (especially since DirecTV didn't, which has since been rectified) but now the company is willing to let the network's contract expire this summer, taking new episodes of Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead away from subscribers. The source of the sudden animosity, according to a press release from AMC, is continuing litigation between it and Dish Network over dropping the Voom HD channels back in 2008, leading to them going dark soon after. The LA Times reports Dish Network claims the denial of its appeal on a decision in the case has nothing to do with its sudden change of heart is solely about AMC's high renewal cost for a relatively low viewership. Whatever you believe, the sniping and threats will likely continue right up until the contract runs out June 30th, which is at least long enough for this season of Mad Men to finish on its own.
