Asthma ? What's In It For You If You Exercise? | New Health and ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

If you suffer from asthma, you probably think that you can?t exercise properly or safely. That?s a negative, partner, because as you will learn in this brief article, there are ways you can exercise and maintain physical fitness even if you are an asthma sufferer.

Asthma is defined as a chronic lung disorder characterized by symptoms like coughing, deep breathing, tightness of chest and wheezing. Asthma tends to occur with people who are genetically or environmentally predisposed to the condition.

The number of known asthma triggers are too many and varied to be mentioned in one article alone, so we shall stick to the basics ? cockroaches, dust mites, pollen, mold, other allergens, viral infections of the respiratory system, airway congestion ? and those are just a few!

Asthma attacks can be prevented if you do the following.

Bath your pets (if any) on a weekly basis. If you smoke, quit cold turkey (it?s easier than you think), and have smokers at home (if any) smoke outside. Stay inside and leave the AC on in the event that mold or pollen is abundant in your area. Thoroughly wash any fluffy items (stuffed toys, bedding, etc.) in hot water at least once or twice every week. Wash your hands every chance you get. Have a flu shot. Use a scarf to cover your mouth and nose during the winter season. Stay a step ahead of the game by being proactive with regards to your triggers.

Okay, so that was a succinct look at asthma, but probably you?re asking ? is exercise still possible? No ? in fact, a lot of doctors will tell you that you should keep on keeping on when it comes to physical activity. You just have to be smart about how you play and take special pre cautions to avoid attacks.

If you know where to get your inhaler and/or medication and have it handy during exercise, this is the best way to prevent an attack, according to most medical experts. Do not use your inhaler more than three times while engaging in a physical activity or exercising. If asthma-related coughing and wheezing had kept you up the night before, you would want to temporarily curtail your exercise routine the following day.

For something known as IEA (Exercise Induced Asthma), the symptoms are somewhat different, in the fact that they appear after 6 ? 10 minutes of exercise and will often be worse in cold or dry air.

For those who suffer from IEA, the activities you can participate in run the gamut from swimming to skiing to cycling to basketball, volleyball and other team sports. You can choose the activity that suits your tastes the best in order to get the requisite exercise you need every day.

You may have encountered people who deride asthma and refer to inhalers as a ?placebo?, but they honestly don?t know what they?re talking about ? it is a genuine disorder that needs medical treatment. Even though your doctor will be your best friend in treating asthma, you are the one who can prevent your symptoms.

Be on your toes, have your medication handy, and be attuned to your symptoms. Don?t let it put you in a life of misery ? as you can enjoy exercise just like everyone else.
