The Ivy League refers to an athletic conference comprised of eight private higher education institutions in the Northeastern United States. The institutions are Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Harvard University, Dartmouth College, Cornell University, Columbia University and Brown University.

m. The Ivies, as the institutions in the group are generally identified, belong to the leading 1% of the world?s higher education institutions. All institutions spot very high in the yearly worldwide college and universities rankings. Also, the Ivies have the highest economic endowments, up to $26 billion, among all academic institutions worldwide.
All of the schools, except Cornell University, had been founded throughout the colonial period of America. This accounts for seven of the nine colonial colleges that had been chartered prior to the American Revolution. These seven schools had been the major greater education providers in the Middle and Northern Colonies. Faculties of the institutions, as a result, also come from Ivy League institutions. Their most notable graduates had been instrumental in the founding of other notable institutions these days like the University of California whose founders came from Yale University.
The athletic conference became official only in 1902 but its members have been competing against every other since the existence of intercollegiate sports in the United States. Prior to the conference?s official founding, it included the United States Military Academy and United States Naval Academy. Both academies dropped out before the conference was formalized.
